Performance synergism of pervious pavement on stormwater management and urban heat island mitigation: A review of its benefits, key parameters, and co-benefits approach.

Due to urbanization, large portions of vegetated territory have been replaced by waterproof surfaces. The consequences are greater outflows, lower infiltration, and lower evapotranspiration. Pavement systems made with permeable surfaces allow the infiltration of water, ensuring reduction of runoff volume. In this paper, the methods of analysis of the hydrological and environmental performance of the pavement systems are reviewed in the context of urban drainage and regarding their durability. The purpose is to present an overview of the studies published during the last decade in the field. The Pubmed and Web Science Core Collection electronic databases were used to conduct the scientific literature survey. This generated 1238 papers, of which only 17 met the criteria and were included and discussed in this review. The evidence drawn from the knowledge on which the document is based provides useful critical interpretations of existing studies to progress the current understanding on hydrological performance and environment impacts in terms of conventional pollutant removal efficiency and the current permeable pavement systems.

A Systematic Review of the Hydrological, Environmental and Durability Performance of Permeable Pavement Systems

The permeable pavement has exceptional environmental benefits compared to the traditional hardening pavement However, few studies have been conducted on the evaluation of the life cycle impacts of permeable pavement By developing an integrated life cycle evaluation method, this paper aims to comprehensively evaluate the life cycle benefits of permeable pavement from the perspective of both the economic cost and the environmental impact, thus realizing a comprehensive trade-off of impacts of permeable pavement In the case study, the economic cost and environmental impact of Permeable Asphalt pavement (PA) and Dense-graded Asphalt pavement (DA) with different traffic volumes and structures are compared under the same functional unit and environmental conditions The results show that PA's high investment in raw material and maintenance makes its economic cost higher than DA, whereas the environmental benefits are considerable However, the results of the uncertainty analysis indicate that the application of PA still needs caution when the environmental conditions are unstable This study can act as a supplement to the existing life cycle research of the permeable pavement, and provide theoretical support and reference for its further promotion and application

Integrated life cycle assessment of permeable pavement: Model development and case study

Permeable pavements, as additive structures that have a good capability for runoff and pollutant reduction, are extensively used for sustainable urban drainage techniques. However, the exact mechanisms of runoff retention and pollutant reduction of a permeable pavement system remain unclear and so, it has become an ongoing issue and motivation for hydrologists and design and structural engineers. In this research paper, a suite of four scale-based runoff plots representing permeable pavements were designed with different permeable surface types and gravel layer thickness treatments, and coupled with simulated rainfall experiments to analyze the impacts of structural factors of permeable pavements on runoff retentions and pollution reduction. The present results showed that the average time to runoff for permeable pavements under low-intensity rainfall scenarios was approximately 78.5 min, while this was shortened to only 51.5 min under high-intensity rainfall scenarios. In terms of the average runoff retention of permeable pavements tested under low- and high-intensity rainfall cases, the results recorded approximately 52.5% and 42.5%, respectively, but runoff retention performances were relatively greater for the case of smaller storms within the scale experiments. Importantly, there was no statistical significance for the time to runoff and runoff retention between the permeable bricks and porous concretes for the analyzed rainfall events. The thicker gravel layers significantly delayed runoff generation and increased runoff retention percentages. Runoff pollutant load reduction rates of total suspended solids (TSS), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) were varied between permeable bricks and porous concretes. Runoff pollutants load reduction rates of TSS, TN, and TP were highly enhanced while the gravel layer thickness increased from 10 to 20 cm. Higher TSS, TN, and TP pollutant load removals were found from the lower intensity rainfalls. These findings could promote understanding of the hydrologic properties of permeable pavements and help design engineers in optimizing their design of permeable pavements for better runoff retention and pollution removal.

Compared with the experiment system in the prior art, the experiment system of the present invention has advantages of simple structure, convenient operation, economy and practicality, and is suitable for the low impact development facility water quality simulation research in the room, and further has the water amount simulation function.
