Sandy grade alumina is a valuable intermediate material that is mainly produced by the Bayer process and used for manufacturing primary metallic aluminum. Coal fly ash is generated in coal-fired power plants as a by-product of coal combustion that consists of submicron ash particles and is considered to be a potentially hazardous technogenic waste. The present paper demonstrates that the Al-chloride solution obtained by leaching coal fly ash can be further processed to obtain sandy grade alumina, which is essentially suitable for metallic aluminum production. The novel process developed in the present study involves the production of amorphous alumina via the calcination of aluminium chloride hexahydrate obtained by salting-out from acid Al-Cl liquor. Following this, alkaline treatment with further Al2O3 dissolution and recrystallization as Al(OH)3 particles is applied, and a final calcination step is employed to obtain sandy grade alumina with minimum impurities. The process does not require high-pressure equipment and reutilizes the alkaline liquor and gibbsite particles from the Bayer process, which allows the sandy grade alumina production costs to be to significantly reduced. The present article also discusses the main technological parameters of the acid treatment and the amounts of major impurities in the sandy grade alumina obtained by the different (acid and acid-alkali) methods.

A review of the alumina production from coal fly ash, with a focus in Russia

Aluminum industry is one of the most important industries in China’s nonferrous metallurgy industry. With the development of China’s alumina output, red mud emission get 50 million ton at 2011. Under this condition, “Calcification-Carbonation Method” was put forward to deal with red mud by Northeastern University, the main purpose of this method is to change the balance phase of red mud into 2CaO·SiO2 and CaCO3 with hydrometallurgical process. This paper mainly research on the effect of carbonation conditions and steps on alumina extraction and dealkalize efficiency. The results indicate that: through multi-steps carbonation treatment of calcified slag by the new method, A/S of the new structure red mud lowed below to 0.24 and the Na2O content lowed below to 0.26% at carbonation temperature 120°C, CO2 pressure of 1.2MPa with 5-steps carbonation treatment. The new structure red mud could be used in cement industry directly.

Multi-Steps Carbonation Treatment of Calcified Slag of Red Mud

The mixer-settler is a core device of solvent extraction for separating rare earth elements. There are some adverse effects like high rare earth accumulation and poor production efficiency during industrial production. Current researches usually focus on changing the structure of the mixer-settler without making a breakthrough towards gravity clarification. In this paper, in order to improve the efficiency of clarification, a mixer-settler with double stirring mode was designed and manufactured by adding a stirring device in the settler after reducing the volume of the settler. The innovation of this research involves adopting the ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer to investigate the quantity of aqueous phase entrainment at the settler outlet in order to measure the clarification degree. Experimental results show that the clarification effect with stirring is better than that without stirring. The clarification effect is ameliorated as the stirring speed increases. Generally, the clarification effect shows a best condition when the offset distance is 12.5 cm, making the phase entrainment reduced to less than 0.1%. When the clearance over the tank bottom is 7 cm and 10 cm, respectively, the quantity of aqueous phase entrainment is better than the case with a clearance of 4 cm. The results show that the stirring paddle close to the mixed phase zone can better promote the two-phase separation.

Experimental Study on Aqueous Phase Entrainment in a Mixer-settler with Double Stirring Mode

Abstract A green process that uses the spray pyrolysis method to prepare activated alumina is proposed in this research. The effects of spray temperature, carrier gas pressure, and AlCl3 solution concentration are experimentally investigated using pure reagents. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and specific surface area (BET) analyses. The results indicate that the spray temperature is the most important factor on the conversion ratio of alumina during the spray pyrolysis process. The conversion ratio of alumina achieved over 99% at the following optimal conditions: temperature of 1000°C, pressure of 0.3 MPa, and AlCl3 solution concentration of 10 wt%. The activated alumina with 8–20 nm particle size (γ-Al2O3+α-Al2O3) was prepared using the same process, which well met the requirement of the catalyst carrier. The green utilization of high-alumina fly ash and acid recycling can be achieved by using this process.

A new green process to produce activated alumina by spray pyrolysis

This paper presents a low power and high efficiency high voltage generator circuit embedded in electrically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM). The low power is minimized by a capacitance divider circuit and a regulator circuit using the controlling clock switch technique. The high efficiency is dependent on the zero threshold voltage (Vth) MOSFET and the charge transfer switch (CTS) charge pump. The proposed high voltage generator circuit has been implemented in a 0.35 μm EEPROM CMOS process. Measured results show that the proposed high voltage generator circuit has a low power consumption of about 150.48 μW and a higher pumping efficiency (83.3%) than previously reported circuits. This high voltage generator circuit can also be widely used in low-power flash devices due to its high efficiency and low power dissipation.
