Fluorescent chemosensors based on spiroring-opening of xanthenes and related derivatives.

Iron is one of the most important elements in metabolic processes, being indispensable for all living systems and therefore it is extensively distributed in environmental and biological materials. However, both its deficiency and excess from the normal permissible limit can induce serious disorders. Therefore, several analytical techniques have been adopted for the detection of iron. Among the various techniques used for its detection, the method based on fluorescent sensors has received considerable interest in recent years because of its ability to provide online monitoring of very low concentrations without any pre-treatment of the sample together with the advantages of spatial and temporal resolution. In this article, efforts have been made to review the various molecular and supramolecular fluorescent sensors that have been developed for the selective detection of iron(III).

Iron(III) selective molecular and supramolecular fluorescent probes

Transition metals (d-blocks) are recognized as playing critical roles in biology, and they most often act as cofactors in diverse enzymes; however, improper regulation of transition metal stores is also connected to serious disorders. Therefore, the monitoring and imaging of transition metals are significant for biological research as well as clinical diagnosis. In this article, efforts have been made to review the chemical sensors that have been developed for the detection of the first-row d-block metals (except Cu and Zn): Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni. We focus on the development of fluorescent sensors (fall into three classes: “turn-off”, “turn-on”, and ratiometric), colorimetric sensors, and responsive MRI contrast agents for these transition metals (242 references). Future work will be likely to fill in the blanks: (1) sensors for Sc, Ti, and V; (2) MRI sensors for Cr, Mn, Co, Ni; (3) ratiometric fluorescent sensors for Cr6+, Mn2+, and Ni2+, explore new ways of sensing Fe3+ or Cr3+ without the proton interference, as well as extend applications of MRI sensors to living systems.

Fluorescent, MRI, and colorimetric chemical sensors for the first-row d-block metal ions

A CF3-BODIPY forms strongly luminescent aggregates, which contrasts with the quenched condensed-phase photophysics that are typical for BODIPY dyes. Examination of the luminescent properties of these aggregates – narrow red-shifted absorption and emission bands, minimal Stokes shift and increased fluorescence rate constants – and of the solid-state packing of the dye establish the CF3-BODIPY as the first structurally characterized genuine BODIPY J-aggregate.

The title compound, C35H38N4O3, was prepared as a spiro­lactam ring formation of rhodamine dye for comparison with a ring-opened form. The xanthene ring system is approximately planar. The dihedral angles formed by the spiro­lactam and phenol rings with the xanthene ring system are 85.7 and 109.4°, respectively. Each of the mol­ecules in the crystal structure contains one intra­molecular O—H⋯N hydrogen bond, and they form inter­molecular N—H⋯O hydrogen-bonded chains along the [100] direction. Weak inter­molecular C—H⋯O hydrogen-bonding contacts connect the infinite chains via crystallographic inversion centres to form a two-dimensional network.
