examined to model the underlying transport mechanisms in the PEFC with different levels of complexities. Due to the macroscopic nature, these two-phase models fail to resolve the underlying structural influence on the transport and performance. Mesoscopic modeling at the pore-scale offers great promise in elucidating the underlying structure-transport-performance interlinks in the PEFC porous components. In this article, a systematic review of the recent progress and prospects of pore-scale modeling in the context of two-phase transport in the PEFC is presented. Specifically, the efficacy of lattice Boltzmann (LB), pore morphology (PM) and pore network (PN) models coupled with realistic delineation of microstructures in fostering enhanced insight into the underlying liquid water transport in the PEFC GDL and CL is highlighted.

Pore-scale modeling of two-phase transport in polymer electrolyte fuel cells—progress and perspective

Numerical study of flow through random packing of non-overlapping spheres in a cylindrical geometry is investigated. Dimensionless pressure drop has been studied for a fluid through the porous media at moderate Reynolds numbers (based on pore permeability and interstitial fluid velocity), and numerical solution of Navier-Stokes equations in three dimensional porous packed bed illustrated in excellent agreement with those reported by Macdonald [1979] in the range of Reynolds number studied. The results compare to the previous work (Soleymani et al., 2002) show more accurate conclusion because the problem of channeling in a duct geometry. By injection of solute into the system, the dispersivity over a wide range of flow rate has been investigated. It is shown that the lateral fluid dispersion coefficients can be calculated by comparing the concentration profiles of solute obtained by numerical simulations and those derived analytically by solving the macroscopic dispersion equation for the present geometry.Copyright © 2006 by ASME

Lattice Boltzmann simulation of liquid water transport in microporous and gas diffusion layers of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells

Invasion percolation with inlet multiple injections and the water management problem in proton exchange membrane fuel cells

We study numerically the process of quasistatic invasion of a fluid in thin porous layers from multiple inlet injection sources focusing on the effect of trapping or mixed wettability, that is, when hydrophobic and hydrophilic pores coexist in the system. Two flow scenarios are considered. In the first one, referred to as the sequential scenario, the injection bonds at the inlet are activated one after the other. In the second one, referred to as the kinetic scenario, the injection bonds at the inlet are activated simultaneously. In contrast with the case of purely hydrophobic systems with no trapping, studied in a previous work, it is shown that the invasion pattern and the breakthrough point statistics at the end of the displacement depend on the flow scenario when trapping or mixed wettability effects are taken into account. The transport properties of the defending phase are also studied and it is shown that a one-to-one relationship between the overall diffusive conductance and the mean saturation cannot be expected in a thin system. In contrast with thick systems, the diffusive conductance also depends on the thickness when the system is thin. After consideration of various generic aspects characterizing thin porous systems, the main results are briefly discussed in relation with the water management problem in proton exchange membrane fuel cells.
