Magnetoelectric (ME) materials composed of magnetostrictive and piezoelectric phases have been the subject of decades of research due to their versatility and unique capability to couple the magnetic and electric properties of the matter. While these materials are often studied from a fundamental point of view, the 4.0 revolution (automation of traditional manufacturing and industrial practices, using modern smart technology) and the Internet of Things (IoT) context allows the perfect conditions for this type of materials being effectively/finally implemented in a variety of advanced applications. This review starts in the era of Rontgen and Curie and ends up in the present day, highlighting challenges/directions for the time to come. The main materials, configurations, ME coefficients, and processing techniques are reported.

Magnetoelectrics: Three Centuries of Research Heading towards the 4.0 Industrial Revolution.

Magnetoelectric laminate composites of piezoelectric-magnetostrictive materials were investigated. The composites were prepared by stacking and bonding Pb(Zr, Ti)O3 (PZT) and Terfenol-D disks. Experimental results indicated that the magnetoelectric voltage coefficient, dE/dH, increased with decreasing thickness and increasing piezoelectric voltage constant (g31) of the PZT layer. We obtained the highest magnetoelectric voltage coefficient of 4.68 V/cmOe at room temperature for the sample with high g33 PZT of 0.5 mm in thickness. This value is about 36 times higher than the best reported value.

Based on a linear piezoelectric constitutive relation and a nonlinear magnetostrictive constitutive relation, a nonlinear magnetoelectric (ME) effect model for lead zirconate titanate (PZT)/Terfenol-D nanobilayer on a substrate has been developed. In this study, the nonlinear ME coefficients at bending mode for two cases (without surface stress and with surface stress) are calculated by using Gurtin-Murdoch theory. The difference between two cases and the influence of residual surface tension are discussed. At the same time, the clamping effect of the substrate on ME effect is studied by altering the thickness ratio of the substrate and selecting different substrate materials. The influences of frequency of the magnetic field, PZT volume fraction on the ME effect are investigated, respectively. Finally, the dependence of ME effect on pre-stress is presented. The results show that for the nanobilayer, both the residual surface tension and surface stress have non-ignored effects on the ME effect. Besides, the resonant frequency of the nanobilayer is very low at the bending mode, which can be enhanced by increasing the thickness ratio of the substrate. Also, the substrate can weaken the ME effect due to the clamping effect, and a more soft substrate material should be selected for large ME effect. In addition, pre-stress plays an important role in the nonlinear ME coupling effect of the model developed.

Nonlinear magnetoelectric effect in PZT/Terfenol-D nanobilayer on a substrate with surface stress

Magnetoelectric (ME) effect in a Ni/PZT/Terfenol-D composite cantilever was tested under three different magnetic loading modes. The frequency-dependent ME effect and dual-peak phenomenon were observed in the experiment. The influence of orientations of magnetic fields on the dual-peak phenomenon of ME coupling was investigated. Magnetic field distribution inside the ME composite structure was simulated, which agrees well with experimental data. The experiment results indicate that ME coefficient versus bias magnetic field curve presents a novel dual-peak phenomenon near the resonant frequency, and the ME coefficient which depends upon the amplitude and orientation of magnetic field presents a nonlinear shift whether at the resonant frequency or not. In addition, the optimal angle corresponding to the largest ME coefficient for different bias fields were obtained. The proposed ME composites-based sensors can be used for detecting or harvesting magnetic signals of uncertain orientations and amplitudes in complex environments.

Effect of magnetic-field orientation on dual-peak phenomenon of magnetoelectric coupling in Ni/PZT/Terfenol-D composites

The damage of large-aperture optical components caused by organic contamination limits the performance improvement of high-power laser facilities. We propose an in situ plasma cleaning technology to remove the organic contaminants on large-aperture optical components, demonstrated by the simulated equipment. The cleaning characteristics of the equipment were investigated by spectral diagnosis. The cleaning capability coefficient was defined to evaluate the performance of the plasma equipment. Then diffusion properties of reactive species along the surface of optical components were elucidated under various charge parameters, including powers, source frequencies, and gas pressures. We discuss the underlying cleaning mechanism for removing organic contaminants. A new plasma cleaning model is established to predict the treatment time with the cleaning capability coefficient.

Spectral diagnosis of in situ plasma cleaning in large-aperture optical components: reactive species characterization and prediction of cleaning.

Surfaces of polycrystalline Al samples were treated by using electropolishing, etching or mechanical polishing methods. Surface morphologies, laser-induced damage thresholds (LIDTs) and ejected particle numbers of different samples were analyzed and compared. Results showed that several different surface morphologies of Al were prepared. A new surface electropolishing technique was developed and an improvement of 95% of LIDT of Al was obtained by using this method. Ejected particle numbers of different samples were monitored and compared to investigate their damage-resistant properties. The particle numbers ejected from the electropolished sample are much smaller than those of etched or mechanically polished samples under Q-switched 355-nm Nd:YAG laser irradiation at 6.8 ns pulses.
