It comes as something ofa surprise to reflect that the New York Review ofBooks is now over twenty years old. Even people of my generation (that is, old enough to remember the revolutionary 196os but not young enough to have taken a very exciting part in them) think of the paper as eternally youthful. In fact, it has gone through years of relatively quiet life, yet, as always in a competitive journalistic market, it is the controversies that attract the interest of the reader and to which the history (especially an admittedly impressionistic survey that tries to include something of the intellectual context in which a journal has operated) must give some attention. Not all the attacks which the New York Review has attracted, both early in its career and more recently, are worth more than a brief summary. What do we now make, for example, of Richard Kostelanetz's forthright accusation that 'The New York Review was from its origins destined to publicize Random House's (and especially [Jason] Epstein's) books and writers'?1 Well, simply that, even if the statistics bear out the charge (and Kostelanetz provides some suggestive evidence to support it, at least with respect to some early issues), there is nothing surprising in a market economy about a publisher trying to push his books through the pages of a journal edited by his friends. True, the New York Review has not had room to review more than around fifteen books in each issue and there could be a bias in the selection of

In this spirit she recommends the shifi to a 'nomadic' understanding of the subject as alone able to resist the potential 'microfascism' of all 'hegemonies' whatever their size, and however local. Such nomadic shifts, she argues 'designate a creative sort of becoming; a performative metaphor that allows for otherwise unlikely encounters and unsuspected sources of interaction of experience and of knowledge'. They also, one might argue, make it difficult to see how you would defend any positive form of hegemony or constructive solidarity (where does it leave, for example, the politics of the neo-Gramscians and advocates of 'radical democracy'?). Braidotti clearly intends to entice us with this vision of the territories and transgressions opened up to the 'nomadic' subject, and makes a number of astute points in the course of its elaboration. But overall I found these essays rather flatly written and repetitious in their argument. A little more self-irony and some more exacting editing would have considerably added to the pleasures of this particular voyage of discovery.

In her paper "Queer Theory and Discourses of Desire," Louise O. Vasvari proposes that the multiplicity of ways that language constructs -or silences -the socially constructed expression of erotic desire is a necessary complement to the study of gendered and of sexual identity. Vasvari contributes to queer theory and its subfield, queer linguistics, with the term "queer" understood as more inclusive and less male-oriented than "gay" where queer theory seeks to read between and outside the lines of the dominant heteronormative discourses that studies how mainstream reproductive heterosexuality comes to be (re)produced through cultural narratives as self-evident, obligatory, and desirable. Queer theory also aims to examine hitherto unheard of voices, suppressed narratives, as well as the development of counter-hegemonic queer discourses that talk about same-sex and other "perverse" desires and subjectivities. Based on her discussion of queer theory, Vasvari presents and analyses representative samples of queer discourses from a range of cultural texts that serve to encode desire, with the aim of working towards a comparative analysis of heteronormative versus "queer" scripts. While most texts Vasvari discusses are by necessity from English, her paper includes analyses of emerging queer discourses through the example of contemporary Hungarian poetry. Louise O. In her article "Introduction to and Bibliography for the Study of Alimentary Life Writing and Recipe Writing as War Literature" Louise O. Vasvari defines the concept of "alimentary life writing" and locates it in the broader multidisciplinary context of alimentary history, the history of everyday life, gender studies, trauma, and war and holocaust studies. She also underlines and exemplifies the cultural and gendered significance of alimentary life writing in particular in grounding personal and collective identity formation in the female immigrant and ethnic and multicultural writing.
