Purpose – The purpose of this systematic review was to explore the nature of the marketing of higher education (HE) and universities in an international context. The objectives of the review were to: systematically collect, document, scrutinise and critically analyse the current research literature on supply‐side higher education marketing; establish the scope of higher education marketing; identify gaps in the research literature; and make recommendations for further research in this field.Design/methodology/approach – The approach for this study entailed extensive searches of relevant business management and education databases. Universities in a competitive global marketplace

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to report on the design and use of a questionnaire to measure student satisfaction at Liverpool John Moores University's Faculty of Business and Law.Design/methodology/approach – The paper utilised the concept of the service‐product bundle to design the survey questionnaire and then used SPSS and Quadrant Analysis to analyse the results to determine which aspects of the University's services were most important and the degree to which they satisfied the students.Findings – The most important aspects were those associated with teaching and learning, while the least important were those associated with the physical facilities.Practical implications – The concept of the service‐product bundle is a valid and reliable tool for the design of a satisfaction survey and segments a University's service offering in such a way as to allow management to target resources at those areas that are perceived to be low satisfaction and high importance. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose a theoretical model that integrates the different groups of factors which influence the decision‐making process of international students, analysing different dimensions of this process and explaining those factors which determine students' choice.Design/methodology/approach – A hypothetical model is presented which shows the purchase intention as an independent variable dependent on five factors: personal reasons; the effect of country image, influenced by city image; institution image; and the evaluation of the programme of study. International students' decision‐making process

Despite rhetoric of added value, facilities management suffers a dearth of objectively researched, publicly available information concerning the impact of facilities on businesses at the level of market sectors or individual organisations. This paper aims to correct that situation for UK higher education institutions. A survey of undergraduates starting university in 2001 has confirmed, to high levels of significance, earlier research with the 2000 intake. For many institutions, facilities factors, where provided to a high standard, are perceived as having an important influence on students’ choice of institution. Year‐on‐year comparisons show strong agreement at the global level and, where data could be gathered, at the institutional level. Individual institutions show marked differences, significant at levels of confidence of over 95 per cent. A comparison of “reputational pull” and “facilities pull” is suggested as a means of differentiating the “brand” of different institutions.

The impact of facilities on student choice of university

The study was concerned with investigating the most effective means of motivating low waged workers in the UK’s private and public sectors. Levels of job satisfaction, as an indicator of work motivation, were compared between ancillary staff in the National Health Service (NHS) and the hotel and leisure industry, and correlated with the staff‐centred programmes introduced in organisations for addressing the issue of staff motivation. Through empirical study no association was found between financial incentives and job satisfaction or staff motivation, and a positive correlation was found between staff‐centred programmes and staff satisfaction and staff motivation, which has implications for the working practices for these workers in the NHS. These findings are placed in a theoretical context.

An evaluation of programmes for staff motivation in NHS and hotel ancillary staff

Deployment and effectiveness of a series of property and facilities management (FM) policies and standards is examined from a knowledge management perspective. Does that give a better basis for effective deployment than a view of policy as driven by experts interpreting business need? A survey of the perceptions of users concerning the need for, and the deployment in practice of, standards reveals four factors which appear to correlate with the steps of the knowledge creation process suggested by Nonaka and Takeuchi. The authors believe this to be the first demonstration of FM conceptualised in such a manner. Adopting a more socially orientated approach which maximises the individual’s input to the knowledge creation process, should lead to improved quality of codified knowledge, and improvement in both customer satisfaction levels and deployment in practice of standards.

FM policies and standards as a knowledge management system

In the year 2000, the UK government promoted the concept that hospital services be shaped around the needs of the patient to make their stay in hospital as comfortable as possible and advocated the introduction of a ward housekeeper role in at least 50 per cent of hospitals by 2004. This is a ward‐based non‐clinical role centred on cleaning, food service and maintenance to ensure that the basics of care are right for the patient. In 2002 the Facilities Management Graduate Centre at Sheffield Hallam University completed a series of six case studies looking at the role within different NHS Trusts. These were developed through interviews and observations with the facilities manager, ward housekeepers and nursing staff and also by collecting documentary evidence such as job descriptions, financial details and training information. Common themes were identified, relating to experiences of developing and implementing the ward housekeeper role. This paper suggests models of best practice relating to role, recruitment, induction, training, integration and management.
