Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have found numerous applications and are expected to bring fertile business opportunities in the next decade. Among various enabling technologies for UAVs, wireless communication is essential and has drawn significantly growing attention in recent years. Compared to the conventional terrestrial communications, UAVs’ communications face new challenges due to their high altitude above the ground and great flexibility of movement in the 3-D space. Several critical issues arise, including the line-of-sight (LoS) dominant UAV-ground channels and induced strong aerial-terrestrial network interference, the distinct communication quality-of-service (QoS) requirements for UAV control messages versus payload data, the stringent constraints imposed by the size, weight, and power (SWAP) limitations of UAVs, as well as the exploitation of the new design degree of freedom (DoF) brought by the highly controllable 3-D UAV mobility. In this article, we give a tutorial overview of the recent advances in UAV communications to address the above issues, with an emphasis on how to integrate UAVs into the forthcoming fifth-generation (5G) and future cellular networks. In particular, we partition our discussion into two promising research and application frameworks of UAV communications, namely UAV-assisted wireless communications and cellular-connected UAVs, where UAVs are integrated into the network as new aerial communication platforms and users, respectively. Furthermore, we point out promising directions for future research.

Accessing From the Sky: A Tutorial on UAV Communications for 5G and Beyond

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have attracted great interest in rapid deployment for both civil and military applications. UAV communication has its own distinctive channel characteristics compared to the widely used cellular or satellite systems. Accurate channel characterization is crucial for the performance optimization and design of efficient UAV communication. However, several challenges exist in UAV channel modeling. For example, the propagation characteristics of UAV channels are under explored for spatial and temporal variations in non–stationary channels. Additionally, airframe shadowing has not yet been investigated for small size rotary UAVs. This paper provides an extensive survey of the measurement methods proposed for UAV channel modeling that use low altitude platforms and discusses various channel characterization efforts. We also review from a contemporary perspective of UAV channel modeling approaches, and outline future research challenges in this domain.

A Survey of Channel Modeling for UAV Communications

In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), particularly for small UAVs, due to their affordable prices, wide availability, and relative ease of operability. Existing and future applications of UAVs include remote surveillance and monitoring, relief operations, package delivery, and communication backhaul infrastructure. Additionally, UAVs are envisioned as an important component of 5G wireless technology and beyond. The unique application scenarios for UAVs necessitate accurate air-to-ground (AG) propagation channel models for designing and evaluating UAV communication links for control/non-payload as well as payload data transmissions. These AG propagation models have not been investigated in detail, relative to terrestrial propagation models. In this paper, a comprehensive survey is provided on available AG channel measurement campaigns, large and small scale fading channel models, their limitations, and future research directions for UAV communication scenarios.

Accessing From The Sky: A Tutorial on UAV Communications for 5G and Beyond

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), featured by flexible configuration, robust deployment, and line-of-sight links, has a great potential to provide ubiquitous wireless coverage and high-speed transmission. In this paper, we aim to analyze the coverage performance of UAV-assisted terrestrial cellular networks, where partially energy-harvesting-powered caching UAVs are randomly deployed in the 3-D space with a minimum and maximum altitude, i.e., $H_{l}$ and $H_{h}$ . A novel cooperative UAV clustering scheme is proposed to offload ground mobile terminals (GMTs) from ground cellular base stations to cooperative UAV clusters. A cooperative UAV cluster is developed within a cylinder with projection centered on a GMT, based on their energy states, the cached contents, and the cell loads. With tractable Poisson point process and Gamma approximation, explicit expressions for the successful transmission probabilities are obtained. A theoretical analysis reveals that the cooperative probability of a UAV and the offloading probability of a GMT have bell-shaped relation with respect to the radius of the cylinder and the cache hit probability (the matching probability of a content request and content cache). Numerical results are provided to demonstrate the impacts of the system parameters on the cooperative UAV cluster. The results also give the optimal average altitude ( ${H_{l}+H_{h}}/{2}$ ) and altitude difference ( $H_{h}-H_{l}$ ) in maximizing the coverage performance with the proposed cooperative transmission scheme.

Cooperative UAV Cluster-Assisted Terrestrial Cellular Networks for Ubiquitous Coverage

In this article we presented an overview of UASs for civil applications focusing on the communication component. We identified several available communication technologies for UAVs, their constraints, and also protocols available for implementing the remote operation of the vehicles. As an attractive solution for the A2G communication link for UAVs, we discussed the potential of mobile networks with their fully deployed infrastructures, wide radio coverage, high throughputs, reduced latencies, and large availability of radio modems. We described how a UAS can be implemented in a flexible and modular approach that allows it to rely on one or several wireless (UAVs and GCSs) and wired (GCSs) technologies. Despite the advantages of a system based on cellular and IP networks, there are problems that must be dealt with, namely, possible loss of radio coverage, presence of NAT, delay, jitter, and packet loss. Following the proposed architecture, we implemented an UAS and conducted some flight tests, which showed that the operation of the vehicles in semi-automatic or fully-automatic modes is feasible. It is expected that future enhancements for 4G networks and evolution to 5G will benefit UAV communications even further with lower latencies, higher throughput, and higher reliability.

Cellular for the skies: exploiting mobile network infrastructure for low altitude air-to-ground communications

Although the concept was born within military use, in recent years we have witnessed an impressive development of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for civil and academic applications. Driving this growth is the myriad of possible scenarios where this technology can be deployed, such as: fire detection, search and rescue operations, surveillance, police operations, building and engineering inspections, aerial photography and video for post-disaster assessment, agricultural monitoring, remote detection (radiation, chemical, electromagnetic), weather services, UAV photogrammetry, airborne relay networks, and more [1]. Undoubtedly, the increased use of UAVs has been sustained through the research and development of multiple low-cost solutions for the control of aerial vehicles, the evolution in microelectronics with multiple off-the-shelf components and sensors, and also through a growing global developers community with several UAV related open source projects.
