Epidemiology, risk factors, and natural history of hepatocellular carcinoma.
Giuseppe Montalto,Melchiorre Cervello,Lydia Giannitrapani,F. D'Antona,Terranova A,Luigi Castagnetta +5 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that tumor growth in a cirrhotic liver is variable and that the time in which a lesion in undetectable until it becomes 2 cm is between 4 and 12 months, therefore, the suggested interval for surveillance screening with ultrasound in patients with liver cirrhosis has been set at 6 months.
Journal ArticleDOI
Incidence of Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Patients With HCV-Associated Cirrhosis Treated With Direct-Acting Antiviral Agents.

TL;DR: In an analysis of data from a large prospective study of patients with hepatitis C virus-associated compensated or decompensated cirrhosis, it is found that the SVR to DAA treatment decreased the incidence of HCC over a mean follow-up of 14 months.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sex Hormones and Risk of Liver Tumor
Lydia Giannitrapani,Maurizio Soresi,E. La Spada,Melchiorre Cervello,Natale D'Alessandro,Giuseppe Montalto +5 more
TL;DR: The female predilection and clinical observations of LH growth under conditions of estrogenic exposure suggest a possible role for estrogen in the pathogenesis of LHs, and the relationship between sex hormones and liver tumors is investigated.
Journal ArticleDOI
Surveillance Program for Diagnosis of HCC in Liver Cirrhosis: Role of Ultrasound Echo Patterns.
Maurizio Soresi,Antonino Terranova,Anna Licata,Antonietta Serruto,Giuseppe Montalto,Giuseppe Brancatelli,Lydia Giannitrapani +6 more
TL;DR: This investigation investigated the existence of an ultrasound pattern indicating a higher risk of developing HCC in patients under surveillance, and found homogeneous and bright liver echo patterns and the absence of portal hypertension were not related to HCC.
Journal ArticleDOI
Is early recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma in HCV cirrhotic patients affected by treatment with direct-acting antivirals? A prospective multicentre study
Giuseppe Cabibbo,Salvatore Petta,Calvaruso,Irene Cacciola,M.R. Cannavò,S. Madonia,Marco Distefano,L. Larocca,Tullio Prestileo,Fabio Tinè,Gaetano Bertino,Lydia Giannitrapani,F. Benanti,Anna Licata,I. Scalisi,Giovanni Mazzola,F. Cartabellotta,N. Alessi,Marco Barbara,Maurizio Russello,G. Scifo,Giovanni Squadrito,Giovanni Raimondo,Antonio Craxì,Di Marco,C. Cammà +25 more
TL;DR: Data on HCV‐related hepatocellular carcinoma early recurrence in patients whose HCC was previously cured, and subsequently treated by direct‐acting antivirals (DAAs), are equivocal.
