A full-halo coronal mass ejection (CME) left the Sun on 21 June 2015 from active region (AR) NOAA 12371. It encountered Earth on 22 June 2015 and generated a strong geomagnetic storm whose minimum Dst value was −204 nT. The CME was associated with an M2-class flare observed at 01:42 UT, located near disk center (N12 E16). Using satellite data from solar, heliospheric, and magnetospheric missions and ground-based instruments, we performed a comprehensive Sun-to-Earth analysis. In particular, we analyzed the active region evolution using ground-based and satellite instruments (Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO), Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS), Hinode, Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI), covering H
 $\upalpha$
 , EUV, UV, and X-ray data); the AR magnetograms, using data from SDO/Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI); the high-energy particle data, using the Payload for Antimatter Matter Exploration and Light-nuclei Astrophysics (PAMELA) instrument; and the Rome neutron monitor measurements to assess the effects of the interplanetary perturbation on cosmic-ray intensity. We also evaluated the 1 – 8 A soft X-ray data and the ${\sim}\, 1$
 MHz type III radio burst time-integrated intensity (or fluence) of the flare in order to predict the associated solar energetic particle (SEP) event using the model developed by Laurenza et al. (Space Weather
				7(4), 2009). In addition, using ground-based observations from lower to higher latitudes (International Real-time Magnetic Observatory Network (INTERMAGNET) and European Quasi-Meridional Magnetometer Array (EMMA)), we reconstructed the ionospheric current system associated with the geomagnetic sudden impulse (SI). Furthermore, Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) measurements were used to image the global ionospheric polar convection during the SI and during the principal phases of the geomagnetic storm. In addition, to investigate the influence of the disturbed electric field on the low-latitude ionosphere induced by geomagnetic storms, we focused on the morphology of the crests of the equatorial ionospheric anomaly by the simultaneous use of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers, ionosondes, and Langmuir probes onboard the Swarm constellation satellites. Moreover, we investigated the dynamics of the plasmasphere during the different phases of the geomagnetic storm by examining the time evolution of the radial profiles of the equatorial plasma mass density derived from field line resonances detected at the EMMA network (
 $1.5 < \mathrm{L} < 6.5$
 ). Finally, we present the general features of the geomagnetic response to the CME by applying innovative data analysis tools that allow us to investigate the time variation of ground-based observations of the Earth’s magnetic field during the associated geomagnetic storm.

Comprehensive Analysis of the Geoeffective Solar Event of 21 June 2015: Effects on the Magnetosphere, Plasmasphere, and Ionosphere Systems

Ultra-low frequency (ULF; approx. 1 mHz ≤ f ≤ 10 Hz) MHD plasma waves are readily recorded throughout the Earth’s magnetosphere and on the ground. Generated by a variety of instabilities, ULF waves transport and couple energy throughout the system, and may play important roles in the energization and loss of radiation belt particles. ULF waves also provide a convenient probe and diagnostic monitor of the magnetosphere. The availability of multipoint measurements from spacecraft, ionospheric sounders and ground magnetometer arrays and the increasing sophistication of modeling tools have stimulated much recent progress in this area. Nevertheless, fundamental questions remain regarding the generation, propagation and consequences of these waves. This chapter reviews recent developments in these areas.

Magnetospheric ULF Waves: A Review

The results of the first 18 months of the PLASMON project are presented. We have extended our three, existing ground-based measuring networks, AWDANet (VLF/whistlers), EMMA/SANSA (ULF/FLRs), and AARDDVARK (VLF/perturbations on transmitters’ signal), by three, eight, and four new stations, respectively. The extended networks will allow us to achieve the four major scientific goals, the automatic retrieval of equatorial electron densities and density profiles of the plasmasphere by whistler inversion, the retrieval of equatorial plasma mass densities by EMMA and SANSA from FLRs, developing a new, data assimilative model of plasmasphere and validating the model predictions through comparison of modeled REP losses with measured data by AARDDVARK network. The first results on each of the four objectives are presented through a case study on a space weather event, a dual storm sudden commencement which occurred on August 3 and 4, 2010.

The plasmasphere during a space weather event: first results from the PLASMON project

[1] We present observations from the magnetopause to the ground during periods of large amplitude, transient dynamic pressure pulses in the magnetosheath. While individual magnetosheath pulses are sharp and impulsive, the magnetospheric response is much smoother with frequencies in the Pc5–6 range being excited in the compressional and poloidal components of the magnetic field. We show that the magnetopause acts like a low-pass filter, suppressing timescales shorter than a few minutes. Further filtering appears to occur locally within the magnetosphere, which may be due to the unusual field line resonance frequency profile on this day. Ground magnetometer and radar data along with equivalent ionospheric currents show signatures of traveling convection vortices, similar to the response from pressure variations of solar wind origin. However, the signatures are associated with groups of magnetosheath pulses rather than individual ones due to the impulsive nature of the pressure variations. Thus, the scale-dependent magnetospheric response to these transient pressure variations results in coherent signatures on longer timescales than any individual pulse.

Magnetospheric response to magnetosheath pressure pulses: A low pass filter effect

[1] Sudden impulses (SIs) are an important source of ultra low frequency (ULF) wave activity throughout the Earth's magnetosphere. Most SI-induced ULF wave events have been reported in the dayside magnetosphere; it is not clear when and how SIs drive ULF wave activity in the nightside plasma sheet. We examined the ULF response of the nightside plasma sheet to SIs using an ensemble of 13 SI events observed by THEMIS (Timed History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms) satellites (probes). Only three of these events resulted in ULF wave activity. The periods of the waves are found to be 3.3, 6.0, and 7.6 min. East-west magnetic and radial electric field perturbations, which typically indicate the toroidal mode, are found to be stronger and can have phase relationships consistent with standing waves. Our results suggest that the two largest-amplitude ULF responses to SIs in the nightside plasma sheet are tailward-moving vortices, which have previously been reported, and the dynamic response of cross-tail currents in the magnetotail to maintain force balance with the solar wind, which has not previously been reported as a ULF wave driver. Both mechanisms could potentially drive standing Alfven waves (toroidal modes) observed via the field-line resonance mechanism. Furthermore, both involve frequency selection and a preference for certain driving conditions that can explain the small number of ULF wave events associated with SIs in the nightside plasma sheet.

THEMIS observations of ULF wave excitation in the nightside plasma sheet during sudden impulse events

[1] Ultra-low-frequency (ULF) field line resonances can be used to infer the mass density along magnetospheric magnetic field lines. By specifying how mass density is distributed along the magnetic field (usually a power law as a function of distance from the Earth) and a dipole magnetic field geometry, the MHD standing wave equation can be analytically solved and mass density inferred from observed field line eigenfrequencies. However, the geometry of the Earth's magnetic field can deviate significantly from a dipole, even at relatively low L shells and on the dayside magnetosphere. This study investigates the importance of including a realistic magnetic field geometry when computing plasma mass density from observed field line eigenfrequencies. A generalized version of the toroidal mode MHD standing wave equation is solved using the Tsyganenko (2002a, 2002b) empirical magnetic field model (T01). The results are compared to those found using a dipole. We find that assuming a dipole magnetic field geometry results in an overestimation of mass density. The overestimation is larger for more disturbed levels of geomagnetic activity. Our results have important implications for the inference of heavy ions in the magnetosphere. Namely, an increase in heavy ion concentration as a result of enhanced geomagnetic activity will be exaggerated unless the proper magnetic field geometry is taken into account when calculating mass density from field line eigenfrequencies.

Computing magnetospheric mass density from field line resonances in a realistic magnetic field geometry

We report the first search results for axion dark matter using an 18 T high-temperature superconducting magnet haloscope. The scan frequency ranges from 4.7789 to 4.8094 GHz. No significant signal consistent with the Galactic halo dark matter axion is observed. The results set the best upper bound of axion-photon-photon coupling (g_{aγγ}) in the mass ranges of 19.764 to 19.771  μeV (19.863 to 19.890  μeV) at 1.5×|g_{aγγ}^{KSVZ}| (1.7×|g_{aγγ}^{KSVZ}|), and 19.772 to 19.863  μeV at 2.7×|g_{aγγ}^{KSVZ}| with 90% confidence level, respectively. This remarkable sensitivity in the high mass region of dark matter axion is achieved by using the strongest magnetic field among the existing haloscope experiments and realizing a low-noise amplification of microwave signals using a Josephson parametric converter.
