Following a brief introduction to the applications for wavelength conversion and the different available conversion techniques, the paper gives an in depth analysis of cross gain and cross phase wavelength conversion in semiconductor optical amplifiers. The influence of saturation filtering on the bandwidth of the converters is explained and conditions for conversion at 20 Gb/s or more are identified. The cross gain modulation scheme shows extinction ratio degradation for conversion to longer wavelengths. This can be overcome using cross phase modulation in semiconductor optical amplifiers that are integrated into interferometric structures. The first results for monolithic integrated interferometric wavelength converters are reviewed, and the quality of the converted signals is demonstrated by transmission of 10 Gb/s converted signals over 60 km of nondispersion shifted single mode fiber.

All-optical wavelength conversion by semiconductor optical amplifiers

Recent advances in developing nonlinear optical techniques for processing serial digital information at high speed are reviewed. The field has been transformed by the advent of semiconductor nonlinear devices capable of operation at 100 gigabits per second and higher, well beyond the current speed limits of commercial electronics. These devices are expected to become important in future high-capacity communications networks by allowing digital regeneration and other processing functions to be performed on data signals “on the fly” in the optical domain.

Nonlinear Optics for High-Speed Digital Information Processing.

We describe some of the results of the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) sponsored Consortium on Wideband All-Optical Networks in developing architectures, technology components, and applications for the realization of scaleable, wideband, and transparent optical wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) networks. Our architecture addresses all-optical transport over the wide, metropolitan, and local areas. It utilizes wavelength partitioning, routing, and active multiwavelength cross-connect switches to achieve a network that is scaleable in the number of users, data rates, and geographic span. The network supports two services which can be point-to-multipoint or multipoint-to-multipoint simplex or duplex connections. The A service is a transparent physically circuit-switched service and the B-service is a scheduled time-slotted circuit which is transparent within its time slots. We have developed a 20-channel local and metropolitan area WDM testbed deployed in the Boston area, now undergoing characterization and experimental applications.

A wideband all-optical WDM network

We present a simple, yet powerful method for calculating nonlinear pulse propagation and pulse interaction in active semiconductor waveguides. The model is based on the density matrix equations, which under realistic operation conditions are shown to lead to an accurate description of the material gain, that includes the dynamics of carrier heating and spectral-hole burning (SHB). A very general and compact description of the amplifier dynamics in terms of an integral equation is derived. The model is used to analyze saturation effects in short pulse amplification and nondegenerate four-wave mixing. An analytical expression for the four-wave mixing response is derived, which extends previous results to the case of short and intense pulses. Saturation of the four-wave mixing signal is shown to be strongly pulsewidth dependent due to ultrafast gain dynamics, and self-phase modulation is shown to give excessive broadening of the conjugate pulse. Finally, the impacts on the noise characteristics are calculated and shown to explain recent experimental results.

Saturation effects in nondegenerate four-wave mixing between short optical pulses in semiconductor laser amplifiers

Recent progress in the use of semiconductor laser amplifiers (SLA's) for high-speed all-optical switching is reviewed. We show that, despite SLA's having lifetimes of ⩾100 ps, they are, to date, the most promising material system for all-optical ultrafast signal processing. We highlight the role of SLA carrier dynamics, which permits switching rates faster than the recovery time. Experimental results are presented that imply that switching rates of as much as ∼100 GHz should be possible. Recent experiments are described in which SLA-based switches were incorporated into novel all-optical architectures.

Semiconductor laser amplifiers for ultrafast all-optical signal processing

Wavelength conversion of optical signals over 20 nm is demonstrated using highly nondegenerate four-wave mixing in a semiconductor traveling-wave optical amplifier. This technique has the potential for extremely-high-speed operation and allows continuous tuning of both input and output wavelengths over the amplifier gain bandwidth. It is demonstrated that, even for such a large wavelength conversion range, it is possible to obtain conversion efficiencies in excess of -10 dB and high extinction ratios. The feasibility of the technique is demonstrated by system measurements at 622 Mb/s, showing a 1.1-dB power penalty at 10/sup -9/ bit error rate (BER). >

20-nm optical wavelength conversion using nondegenerate four-wave mixing

We have demonstrated that mid-span spectral inversion by four-wave mixing in a semiconductor optical amplifier can be used to effectively eliminate dispersion in high bit rate transmission. The technique has been used to achieve transmission of 1OGb/s signals from a directly modulated DFB over 200km dispersive fibre, and of 25ps gain-switched pulses over 100km dispersive fibre. The results show a complete elimination of degradation resulting from fibre chromatic dispersion. The former result represents more than a 40-fold increase in the bit rate distance product for the directly modulated signals by means of MSSI.
