After briefly recapitulating the history of the charm quantum number we sketch the experimental environments and instruments employed to study the behaviour of charm hadrons and then describe the theoretical tools for treating charm dynamics. We discuss a wide range of inclusive production processes before analyzing the spectroscopy of hadrons with hidden and open charm and the weak lifetimes of charm mesons and baryons. Then we address leptonic, exclusive semileptonic and nonleptonic charm decays. Finally we treat $D^0 - \bar D^0$ oscillations and CP (and CPT) violation before concluding with some comments on charm and the quark-gluon plasma. We will make the case that future studies of charm dynamics -- in particular of CP violation -- can reveal the presence of New Physics. The experimental sensitivity has only recently reached a level where this could reasonably happen, yet only as the result of dedicated efforts. This review is meant to be both a pedagogical introduction for the young scholar and a useful reference for the experienced researcher. We aim for a self-contained description of the fundamental features while providing a guide through the literature for more technical issues.

The year 2016 marks the 60th anniversary of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in Dubna, an international intergovernmental organization for basic research in the fields of elementary particles, atomic nuclei, and condensed matter. Highly productive advances over this long road clearly show that the international basis and diversity of research guarantees successful development (and maintenance) of fundamental science. This is especially important for experimental research. In this review, the most significant achievements are briefly described with an attempt to look into the future (seven to ten years ahead) and show the role of JINR in solution of highly important problems in elementary particle physics, which is a fundamental field of modern natural sciences. This glimpse of the future is full of justified optimism.

Search for the flavour-changing neutral-current decay D0 → μ+μ−

The 1992–1995 running of the Fermilab Tevatron (the so-called Run I) ended with many important physics goals accomplished, including the discovery of the top quark, and the anticipation of many further questions to be answered in the future. After many upgrades to the detector and to the accelerator complex, Run II began in April 2001. First results obtained by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) collaboration from the analysis of early Tevatron Run II data are reported here. They fall into two categories: a number of measurements have been performed with the primary goal of establishing detector performance and physics potential. Another set of measurements make use of completely new capabilities of the upgraded detector, thus allowing for competitive results with a modest amount of integrated luminosity.
