From its initial use to describe hydrolysis and condensation processes, the term ‘sol–gel’ is now used for a diverse range of chemistries. In fact, it is perhaps better defined more broadly as covering the synthesis of solid materials such as metal oxides from solution-state precursors. These can include metal alkoxides that crosslink to form metal–oxane gels, but also metal ion–chelate complexes or organic polymer gels containing metal species. What is important across all of these examples is how the choice of precursor can have a significant impact on the structure and composition of the solid product. In this review, we will attempt to classify different types of sol–gel precursor and how these can influence a sol–gel process, from self-assembly and ordering in the initial solution, to phase separation during the gelation process and finally to crystallographic transformations at high temperature.

Solution combustion is an exciting phenomenon, which involves propagation of self-sustained exothermic reactions along an aqueous or sol–gel media. This process allows for the synthesis of a variety of nanoscale materials, including oxides, metals, alloys, and sulfides. This Review focuses on the analysis of new approaches and results in the field of solution combustion synthesis (SCS) obtained during recent years. Thermodynamics and kinetics of reactive solutions used in different chemical routes are considered, and the role of process parameters is discussed, emphasizing the chemical mechanisms that are responsible for rapid self-sustained combustion reactions. The basic principles for controlling the composition, structure, and nanostructure of SCS products, and routes to regulate the size and morphology of the nanoscale materials are also reviewed. The present work describes a new modification process for producing a chelating ion-exchanger fibers with a distinct selectivity for toxic heavy metal ions. Acrylic fibers were reacted with different diamine compounds in similar conditions. Modified acrylic fibers were prepared by partial conversion of the nitrile groups into amino groups under two-step processes. In the first step, the pure liquid diamine was mixed with the fibers and in the second step, water was gradually added to the reaction flask to reach a predetermined 3M concentration at refluxing temperature of 91 °C. The aminated acrylic fibers (AAFs) were used as an ion adsorbent in a series of batch adsorption experiments for removal of chromium(III) and lead (II) ions.



Experimental results showed that modified acrylic fiber with tetra methylene diamine (TMD) has the highest Pb(II) ion adsorption capacity. Results also showed aminated acrylic with ethylene diamine (EDA) has the most Cr(III) ion adsorption ability. Solubility tests showed, amination treatments give rise to the intermolecular crosslinkage in all samples. The Freundlich and Langmuir models simulated the adsorption equilibrium data of Cr(III) ions on modified fibers and their constants were determined.
