A heat transfer textbook

This paper describes modern techniques used to solve contact problems within Computational Mechanics. On the basis of a continuum description of contact, the mathematical structure of the contact formulation for finite element methods is derived. Emphasis is also placed on the constitutive behavior at the contact interface for normal and tangential (frictional) contact. Furthermore, different discretization schemes currently applied to solve engineering problems are formulated for small and finite strain problems. These include isoparametric interpolations, node-to-segment discretizations and also mortar and Nitsche techniques. Furthermore, several algorithms related to spatial contact search and fulfillment of the inequality constraints at the contact interface are discussed. Here, especially the penalty and Lagrange multiplier schemes are considered and also SQP- and linear-programming methods are reviewed.

Computational Contact Mechanics

Models and computational methods for dynamic friction phenomena

: This work addresses the general problems of formulating continuum models of a large class of dynamic frictional phenomena and of developing computation methods for analyzing these phenomena. Of particular interest are theories which can adequately predict stick slip motion, frictional damping in structural dynamics, and sliding resistance. This work id divided into three principal parts. In Part I, a large body of experimental and theoretical literature on friction is critically reviewed and interpreted as a basis for models of dynamic friction phenomena. In part II, continuum models of interfaces are developed which simulate key interface properties identified in Part I. Variational principles for a class of dynamic friction problems are also established. In Part III, finite element models and numerical algorithms for analyzing dynamic friction are presented. Also, a dynamic stability analysis is presented in which it is established that stick slip motion can be associated with dynamic instability of the governing nonlinear system for certain ranges of slip velocity and coefficient of friction. Numerical results suggest that the new models derived here can satisfactorily depict a large and important class of dynamic friction effects. ▪ Abstract This review examines recent advances made in predicting boiling heat fluxes, including some key results from the past. The topics covered are nucleate boiling, maximum heat flux, transition boiling, and film boiling. The review focuses on pool boiling of pure liquids, but flow boiling is also discussed briefly.
