SUMMARY Plate motions relative to the hotspots over the past 4 to 7 Myr are investigated with a goal of determining the shortest time interval over which reliable volcanic propagation rates and segment trends can be estimated. The rate and trend uncertainties are objectively determined from the dispersion of volcano age and of volcano location and are used to test the mutual consistency of the trends and rates. Ten hotspot data sets are constructed from overlapping time intervals with various durations and starting times. Our preferred hotspot data set, HS3, consists of two volcanic propagation rates and eleven segment trends from four plates. It averages plate motion over the past ≈5.8 Myr, which is almost twice the length of time (3.2 Myr) over which the NUVEL-1A global set of relative plate angular velocities is estimated. HS3-NUVEL1A, our preferred set of angular velocities of 15 plates relative to the hotspots, was constructed from the HS3 data set while constraining the relative plate angular velocities to consistency with NUVEL-1A. No hotspots are in significant relative motion, but the 95 per cent confidence limit on motion is typically ±20 to ±40 km Myr −1 and ranges up to ±145 km Myr −1 . The uncertainties of the new angular velocities of plates relative to the hotspots are smaller than those of previously published HS2-NUVEL1 (Gripp & Gordon 1990), while being averaged over a shorter and much more uniform time interval. Nine of the fourteen HS2-NUVEL1 angular velocities lie outside the 95 per cent confidence region of the corresponding HS3NUVEL1A angular velocity, while all fourteen of the HS3-NUVEL1A angular velocities lie inside the 95 per cent confidence region of the corresponding HS2-NUVEL1 angular velocity. The HS2-NUVEL1 Pacific Plate angular velocity lies inside the 95 per cent confidence region of the HS3-NUVEL1A Pacific Plate angular velocity, but the 0 to 3 Ma Pacific Plate angular velocity of Wessel & Kroenke (1997) lies far outside the confidence region. We show that the change in trend of the Hawaiian hotspot over the past 2 to 3 Myr has no counterpart on other chains and therefore provides no basis for inferring a change in Pacific Plate motion relative to global hotspots. The current angular velocity of the Pacific Plate can be shown to differ from the average over the past 47 Myr in rate but not in orientation, with the current rotation being about 50 per cent faster (1.06 ± 0.10 deg Myr −1 ) than the average (0.70 deg Myr −1 ) since the 47-Myr-old bend in the Hawaiian‐Emperor chain.

motion of the Nazca plate with respect to the fixed hotspot reference frame. lsotope ratios in the Galfipagos display a considerable range, from values typical of mid-ocean ridge basalt on Genovesa (87Sr/86Sr: 0.70259, end: +9.4, 206pb/204pb: ! 8.44), to typical oceanic island values on Floreana (87Sr/86Sr: 0.70366, œNd: +5.2, 206pb/204pb: 20.0). La/Sm N ranges from 0.45 to 6.7; other incompatible element abundances and ratios show comparable ranges. Isotope and incompatible element ratios define a horseshoe pattern with the most depleted signatures in the center of the Galfipagos Archipelago and the more enriched signatures on the eastern, northern, and southern periphery. These isotope and incompatible element patterns appear to reflect thermal entrainment of asthenosphere by the Galfipagos plume as it experiences velocity shear in the uppermost asthenosphere. Both north-south heterogeneity within the plume itself and regional variations in degree and depth of melting also affect magma compositions. Rare earth systematics indicate that melting beneath the Galfipagos begins in the garnet peridotite stability field, except beneath the southern islands, where melting may occur entirely in the spinel peridotite stability field. The greatest degree of melting occurs beneath the central western volcanos and decreases both to the east and to the north and south. Sis. 0, FeB. 0, and NaB. 0 values are generally consistent with these inferences. This suggests that interaction between the plume and surrounding asthenosphere results in significant cooling of the plume. Superimposed on this thermal pattern produced by plume-asthenosphere interaction is a tendency for melting to be less extensive and to occur at shallower depths to the south, presumably reflecting a decrease in ambient asthenospheric temperatures away from the Galfipagos Spreading Center.

Petrology and geochemistry of the Galápagos Islands: Portrait of a pathological mantle plume

Maps of the eruptive vents on the active shield volcanoes of Fernandina and Isabela islands, Galapagos, made from aerial photographs, display a distinctive pattern that consists of circumferential eruptive fissures around the summit calderas and radial fissures lower on the flanks. On some volcano flanks either circumferential or radial eruptions have been dominant in recent time. The location of circumferential vents outside the calderas is independent of caldera-related normal faults. The eruptive fissures are the surface expression of dike emplacement, and the dike orientations are interpreted to be controlled by the state of stress in the volcano. Very few subaerial volcanoes display a pattern of fissures similar to that of the Galapagos volcanoes. Some seamounts and shield volcanoes on Mars morphologically resemble the Galapagos volcanoes, but more specific evidence is needed to determine if they also share common structure and eruptive style.

[1] We report results of magnetic data from the Nazca Plate and of geochemical (major element and Sr-Nd-Pb-isotope) analyses of rocks dredged from the Galapagos hot spot tracks (Cocos, Carnegie, Malpelo and Coiba Ridges and adjacent seamounts) in the Central East Pacific. Magnetic anomalies indicate that the Malpelo and Carnegie Ridges were once attached and that seafloor spreading separated the two ridges between 14.5 Ma and 9.5 Ma. The variations in Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic composition show that three of the mantle components currently observed at the Galapagos (Central, Southern, and Eastern) existed in the hot spot for at least 20 m.y., whereas the Northern Galapagos mantle component has been present for at least ∼15 Ma. Our data are consistent with the existence of a compositionally zoned/striped Galapagos plume since ∼20 Ma. Combined constraints from the morphology of the hot spot tracks, the magnetic record, and the isotope geochemistry of the rock samples provide new insights into the hot spot-ridge geometry and interaction of the Galapagos hot spot with the Cocos-Nazca spreading center (CNS) over the past 20 m.y. At 19.5 Ma a ridge jump moved the spreading axis to the northern edge of the hot spot. Between 19.5 and 14.5 Ma, the spreading axis was located above the center of the hot spot. At 14.5 Ma, a new ridge jump moved the spreading axis to the south, splitting the paleo-Carnegie Ridge into the present Carnegie and Malpelo Ridges. The repeated ridge jumps reflect capture of the northwardly drifting spreading center by the Galapagos hot spot. At 11–12 Ma an offset of the spreading axis lay above the plume center. Spreading between the Carnegie and Malpelo Ridges continued until 9.5 Ma.
