Abstract The Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR) have been constructed to give very high centre-of-mass energies in proton-proton collisions by providing high-energy proton beams that collide head-on. By having 26 GeV protons in each beam one obtains 52 GeV centre-of-mass energies. In order to achieve similar energies with ordinary particle accelerators, energies of 1500 GeV would be needed. The main problem with such colliding beam devices is to accumulate sufficiently intense circulating beams that useful interaction rates are obtained. The design aim was a luminosity per intersection region of 4 × 10 30 cm −2 s −1 . This was reached by the end of 1972 and under good experimental conditions. After less than two years operation the ISR have therefore established themselves as an important high energy physics tool. The article describes the construction and the present performance with a few concluding remarks on the physics programme.

Cern intersecting storage rings.

The Next Linear Collider accelerator proposal at SLAC requires a high efficiency, highly reliable, and low cost pulsed power modulator to drive the X band klystrons. The present NLC envisions a solid-state induction modulator design to drive up to 8 klystrons to 500kV for 3/spl mu/s at 120 PPS with one modulator (>1,000 megawatt pulse, 500kW average). A prototype modulator is presently under construction, which well power 4 each 5045 SLAC klystron to greater than 380kV for 3/spl mu/s (>600 megawatt pulse, >300kW Ave.). The modulator will be capable of driving the 8 each X band klystrons when they become available. The paper covers the design, construction, fabrication and preliminary testing of the prototype modulator.

Prototype Solid State Induction Modulator for SLAC NLC

High-voltage transmission electron microscopes (HVTEMs), which can visualize internal structures of micron thick samples, intrinsically have large instrument sizes because of the static voltage isolation. In this Letter, we develop a compact HVTEM, employing a linear accelerator, a subpicosecond beam chopper, and a linear decelerator. 100 kV electrons initially accelerated by a static field are accelerated at radio frequency (rf) up to 500 kV, transmitting through the sample and finally rf decelerated down to 200 kV to be imaged through a 200 kV energy filter. 500 kV imaging, as well as subnanometer resolution at 200 kV, have been demonstrated.

Transmission Electron Microscope Using a Linear Accelerator

This article attempts to give a historical account and review of technological developments and innovations in radio frequency (RF) systems for particle accelerators. The evolution from electrostatic field to the use of RF voltage suggested by R. Wideroe made it possible to overcome the shortcomings of electrostatic accelerators, which limited the maximum achievable electric field due to voltage breakdown. After an introduction, we will provide reviews of technological developments of RF systems for particle accelerators.
