Holography, coherent light amplification and optical phase conjugation with photorefractive materials

The development of a theory of four-wave mixing in photo-refractive crystals is described. This theory is solved in the undepleted pumps approximation with linear absorption and without using the undepleted pumps approximation for negligible absorption. Both the transmission and reflection gratings are treated individually. The results are used to analyze several photorefractive phase conjugate mirrors, yielding reflectivities and thresholds. The use of photorefractive crystals as optical distortion correction elements and experimental demonstrations of several of the passive phase conjugate mirrors are described.

Theory and applications of four-wave mixing in photorefractive media

In this paper, we discuss fundamental issues underlying holographic data storage: grating formation, recording and readout of thick and thin holograms, multiplexing techniques, signal-to-noise ratio considerations, and readout techniques suitable for conventional, phase conjugate, and associative search data retrieval. Next, we consider holographic materials characteristics for digital data storage, followed by a discussion on photorefractive media, fixing techniques, and noise in photovoltaic and other media with a local response. Subsequently, we discuss photopolymer materials, followed by a discussion on system tradeoffs and a section on signal processing and en/decoding techniques, succeeded by a discussion on electronic implementations for control, signal encoding, and recovery. We proceed further by presenting significant demonstrations of digital holographic systems. We close by discussing the outlook for future holographic data storage systems and potential applications for which holographic data storage systems would be particularly suited.

Holographic Data Storage Systems

We have grown and optically characterized strontium‐barium niobate crystals, including both undoped and cerium‐doped crystals having two different Sr/Ba ratios (61/39 and 75/25). By measuring the coupling of two optical beams in the crystals, we have determined the following photorefractive properties: the effective density, sign, and spectral response of the dominant charge carrier, the grating formation rate, dark conductivity, and carrier diffusion length. We find that electrons are the dominant photorefractive charge carriers in all of our samples; the typical density of photorefractive charges is ∼1×1016 cm−3 in the undoped samples. The grating formation rate increases with intensity, with a slope of ∼0.3 cm2/(W s) over an intensity range of ∼1–15 W/cm2 in undoped samples. Cerium doping improves both the charge density (increased by a factor of ∼3) and the response rate per unit intensity (∼5 times faster).

Photorefractive properties of strontium‐barium niobate

A spatial light modulator in the form of a deformable mirror device receives from a frame store data which has been formatted by a data formatter subsequent to gamma correction in a ROM look-up table. The DMD displays different light levels by being ON for selected periods of a series of durations 4, 8, 16, - - - , 1024 varying in proportion to a basic period multiplied by powers of two. The shortest duration 4 for which the DMD can be turned on is a multiple of the basic period, and the series includes additional durations 5, 6, and 7 in the series between the shortest displayable duration 4 and the next power of two 8. Durations 1, 2, and 3 of less than the shortest displayable duration can be displayed by adjusting the turn-on time of a proportion of the adjacent mirrors. The longest duration for which the mirror can be turned on can be employed twice.

Spatial light modulators

Holographic storage experiments using crystal Sr(0.75)Ba(0.25)Nb(2)O(6) (SBN 75/25) as a volume-phase holographic medium show that this material is the most sensitive crystalline storage medium yet discovered. An exposure level of 0.003 J/cm(2) at 0.488 microm produces a 1% diffraction efficiency in a 5-mm length of crystal. In addition to high recording sensitivity, SBN 75-25 exhibits interesting electric-field induced effects that include electric-field enhanced recording sensitivity and voltage-switchable latent-to-active holographic reconstruction efficiency. These effects are explained in terms of drift and diffusion of photoionized carriers coupled with the nonlinear electrooptic behavior characteristic of this low Curie temperature ferroelectric crystal. Detailed measurements of the holographic recording and reconstruction properties of thick phase-volume holograms stored in SBN 75/25 are reported. A mechanism is proposed that correlates the observed electrically controlled holographic response with the dielectric behavior of the crystal. These interesting effects are used to implement a novel, layered optical memory having no moving parts and having electrical access for writing or reading selected layers. An experimental model of the layered memory was constructed to demonstrate the interrelation of the several phenomena involved in the layered concept.
