Impact of Camellia sinensis Iron Oxide Nanoparticle on Growth, Hemato-biochemical and Antioxidant Capacity of Blue Gourami (Trichogaster trichopterus) Fingerlings

Nanoparticles (NPs) can display toxicological effects on aquatic organisms. This study investigates ecotoxicological effects of Ag-NPs on reproductive and blood parameters of adult common molly (Poecilia sphenops) and their larvae. During the LC50 96 h test, female fish were exposed to concentrations of 0, 5, 15, 25, 35, 45 and 60 mg L−1 of Ag-NPs, while larvae were exposed to 0, 3, 5, 10 and 15 mg L−1. Finally, we aim to evaluate the effects of 0, 5, 10 and 15 mg L−1 of Ag-NPs on parturition time, reproductive success and hematological parameters of the mature fish exposed to sub-lethal concentration during a 62-day period. We also evaluated the survival rate of larvae. The results show a positive correlation between mortality rate and Ag-NP concentration. Values for LC50 96 h in adult fish and larvae were 26.85 mg L−1 and 6.22 mg L−1, respectively. A lack of parturition and reproductive success were seen in fish that underwent chronic exposure to Ag-NPs (15 mg L−1). The results show that RBC, WBC and hematocrit were significantly decreased in fish exposed to Ag-NPs. In addition, the serum concentrations of total protein, albumin, cholesterol and triglycerides were significantly increased in fish submitted to Ag-NPs (concentrations of 5–15). In conclusion, submitting a fish to higher concentration than 10 mg L−1 has adverse effects on reproductive system and blood parameters.

The effects of mixed prebiotics in aquaculture: A review

Abstract Benzophenone-3 (BP-3) is a common component of organic sunscreen widely used that can affect especially aquatic ecosystems health, including fish. To verify the biological effects of low concentrations of BP-3 on blood cells, one hundred and forty zebrafish (D. rerio) were used and then randomly divided into five groups: control group (water), solvent group (alcoholic water), and BP-3 group (BP-3 at 7 µg L−1, BP-3 at 70 µg L−1, and BP-3 at 700 µg L−1). The blood slices were stained with Panoptic stain and with Giemsa solution for the hematological analysis. During the exposure to BP-3, no behavioral changes were observed. Although no significant difference in total leukocytes occurred, an increase in neutrophils and a reduction of lymphocytes at the highest concentration on both 7th and 14th days were detected. The total and cytoplasmic area of erythrocytes on the 7th day at the highest concentration were reduced. In addition, alterations on the erythrocyte nuclear morphology in fish exposed to BP-3 were usually visualized, mainly when considered the occurrence of blebbed nucleus and micronucleus, indicating that BP-3 exhibits cytotoxic and mutagenic effects. The results indicate that BP-3 can interfere with the morphophysiology of aquatic organisms.

Effect of benzophenone-3 on the blood cells of zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Blood cells are constantly exposed to several pollutants, including xenobiotics, and they can be considered a useful target for pollution exposition of the animal. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of two xenobiotics (Quaternium-15, a preservative used in personal care products, and Thiacloprid, a neonicotinoid pesticide) on the haematological profile and erythrocyte osmotic fragility (EOF) of equine and bovine blood samples. Ten blood samples from horses and cows were exposed for 24 h to Quaternium-15 at a concentration of 0.1 and 1 mg/L and to Thiacloprid at a concentration of 30 and 60 µg/mL. A decrease in the values of the red blood cells, white blood cells, haematocrit, haemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume, and platelets, and an increase of EOF were found in blood samples exposed to xenobiotics compared to the control. According to the results gathered in the current study, the two xenobiotic compounds herein tested negatively affect the haematological indices causing haemolysis both in cattle and horse blood. This study, despite being preliminary, emphasizes the concept that blood cells are an excellent target for evaluating the effects of xenobiotics.

Blood from Horses and Cows In Vitro Exposed to Quaternium-15 and Thiacloprid: Haematology and Erythrocyte Osmotic Fragility Alterations

The present study investigates the effects of Supplementary diet Hygrophila auriculata on the growth, survival, biochemical and haematological parameters of Cirrhinus mrigala. The seaweed was administered to the fish possessing an initial average weight of 14.063 ± 1.828 g. Fish were fed with supplementary diet H. auriculata exhibited significant difference (P < 0.05) in the growth performance, haematological indices such as RBC count, haematocrit volume, haemoglobin, WBC, MCV, MCH and MCHC concentration in contrast to the control after a period of 8 weeks. Also, there were significant differences in biochemical parameters (P < 0.05), between the fish supplemented with dietary H. auriculata extract and the control group. These findings suggest that the administration of H. auriculata extract has a positive effect on the immunological indices and the immune system activity in Mrigal fish.
