Since the beginning of railway electrification, power quality has been a main problem in railway networks because of their special characteristics. Many ways of power quality improvement have been investigated and applied to ac and dc traction systems through railway electrification history. This paper presents a perspective on power quality issues through railway electrification development and investigates the necessity of power quality and system requirements for appropriate power quality. Compensation strategies are classified and compared. This aims to provide a comprehensive perspective of the power quality issue in railway power/distribution networks for researchers and engineers working on railway electrification. Less than 100 research articles are referenced for researchers to obtain good background information.

Power Quality Issues in Railway Electrification: A Comprehensive Perspective

Energy applications employing high-temperature superconductors (HTS), such as motors/generators, transformers, transmission lines and fault current limiters, are usually operated in the alternate current (AC) regime. In order to be efficient, the HTS devices need to have a sufficiently low value of AC loss, in addition to the necessary current-carrying capacity. Most applications are operated with currents beyond the current capacity of single conductors and consequently require cabled conductor solutions with much higher current carrying capacity, from a few kA to up to 20-30 kA for large hydro-generators. A century ago, in 1914, Ludwig Roebel invented a low-loss cable design for copper cables, which was successively named after him. The main idea behind Roebel cables is to separate the current in different strands and to provide a full transposition of the strands along the cable direction. Nowadays, these cables are commonly used in the stator of large generators. Based on the same design concept of their conventional material counterparts, HTS Roebel cables from REBCO coated conductors were first manufactured at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and have been successively developed in a number of varieties that provide all the required technical features such as fully transposed strands, high transport currents and low AC losses, yet retaining enough flexibility for a specific cable design. In the past few years a large number of scientific papers have been published on the concept, manufacturing and characterization of such cables. Times are therefore mature for a review of those results. The goal is to provide an overview and a succinct and easy-to-consult guide for users, developers, and manufacturers of this kind of HTS cables.

The development of superconducting systems for electric power is driven by the promise of improved efficiency, smaller size, and reduced weight as compared to existing technologies and by the possibility of new applications. Superconducting power components can also contribute to improved power quality and increased system reliability. This paper addresses historical developments and technology status of four superconducting power applications: cables, superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES), fault-current limiters, and transformers. Today, SMES is the only fully functional superconducting system and it has seen only limited use at grid power levels. A few model or demonstration units exist for each of the other three applications. Superconductivity faces several hurdles on the path to widespread use. Perhaps the most important is the need for operating voltages of 100 kV or more. Though progress in this and other areas has been rapid, considerable development is needed before superconducting devices perform reliably in the utility environment. As a result, today, most initial installations are aimed at niche applications and will be installed where space is limited, where power demands are increasing over existing corridors, and/or where initial development costs can be offset by enhanced power grid performance.

Electric power applications of superconductivity

RBCO (R = Y or rare earth element) coated conductors (CC) are the most promising HTS materials for future high field coils operated at moderately high temperature (40-50 K). Coils are planned for the second generation of fusion reactors (DEMO, "DEMOnstrator") and beyond. A ROEBEL bar concept for a high current (kA-class) low AC loss cable is the most suitable assembling technique for conductors in magnet windings due to the flat rectangular cross section. The presented RACC-cable technique (RACC=ROEBEL assembled coated conductors) works with pre-shaping of tapes into strands with the ROEBEL specific meander geometry. The usually very good bending properties of the CC support the assembling procedure of the RACC-cable. We report on a 16 strand RACC-cable with 19 cm transposition length made from CC material from the commercial supplier SuperPower which reached 1020 A transport critical current at 77 K (Jeng = 11.3 kAcm-2). The basic properties of the virgin YBCO tapes and the shaped strands like orientation and field dependent transport currents, current homogeneity and bending effects, were investigated and correlated with the measured properties of the RACC-cable. Calculation of the self field effects by means of a model adapted to the specific RACC-cable geometry and in particular taking into account the current distribution in the cable, explained the 30% current reduction in the cable quantitatively.

ROEBEL Assembled Coated Conductors (RACC): Preparation, Properties and Progress

We describe the high-temperature superconducting (HTS) transformer project run by Siemens. The project started in October 1996 and ended in September 2001. The aim of the project was to show the future prospects for superconducting railway transformers. To study the principle behavior of such a transformer, as a first step we designed, constructed and tested a nominal single-phase transformer of 100 kVA, 50 Hz, 5.5 kV/1.1 kV. After this was successfully tested, we started the design and construction of a single-phase transformer of 1 MVA, 50 Hz, 25 kV/1.4 kV. This unit already has the full ratings of a commercial transformer in many respects, e.g., power range, nominal voltage, 2-limb core with horizontal orientation, two secondary windings and an impedance of 25% at nominal current. Further innovative features are transposed conductor and a closed cooling cycle with sub-cooled nitrogen. The report describes the 1-MVA transformer's detailed design, and presents the results of electrical and thermal transformer routine tests (e.g., measurement of load losses and no-load losses). The conclusion highlights the future perspective of HTS transformers for railway applications.

Development of high-temperature superconducting transformers for railway applications

Superconducting transformers are an important innovation for future power transmission and transportation systems. Powerful, lightweight, energy-saving and environmentally friendly they offer enormous benefits compared to their conventional counterparts. Siemens is developing a 1-MVA demonstrator transformer for laboratory testing, exhibiting innovative features like horizontal design, cabled-conductor windings and a closed cooling cycle with sub-cooled nitrogen. Being one of the most promising applications Siemens has started a programme towards the development of on-board transformers for electrical rail vehicles. This paper summarises world-wide efforts in the development of superconducting transformers and reports on the progress achieved at Siemens.

Development and application of superconducting transformers

Railway companies aim to realize environmentally friendly revenue operations with high efficiency. High Temperature Superconducting (HTS)-transformers offer advantages regarding less mass and volume and considerably higher efficiency in drive systems. Siemens has developed a 1-MVA-HTS-transformer with typical characteristics for railway applications. For a successful introduction in the market, it is essential to guarantee the operational behavior of drive systems in well-known manner. So, Siemens realized the 1st operation of an AC-converter fed by a HTS-transformer. System test measurements of losses, tests of cooling redundancy as well as drive cycle operation were performed to compare the converter operation to sinusoidal operation, to analyze the losses depending on the harmonics of nonsinusoidal current and to investigate the behavior of the whole system under realistic drive cycles of a current rail vehicle.
