This paper presents an overview of motor drive technologies used for safety-critical aerospace applications, with a particular focus placed on the choice of candidate machines and their drive topologies. Aircraft applications demand high reliability, high availability, and high power density while aiming to reduce weight, complexity, fuel consumption, operational costs, and environmental impact. New electric driven systems can meet these requirements and also provide significant technical and economic improvements over conventional mechanical, hydraulic, or pneumatic systems. Fault-tolerant motor drives can be achieved by partitioning and redundancy through the use of multichannel three-phase systems or multiple single-phase modules. Analytical methods are adopted to compare caged induction, reluctance, and PM motor technologies and their relative merits. The analysis suggests that the dual (or triple) three-phase PMAC motor drive may be a favored choice for general aerospace applications, striking a balance between necessary redundancy and undue complexity, while maintaining a balanced operation following a failure. The modular single-phase approach offers a good compromise between size and complexity but suffers from high total harmonic distortion of the supply and high torque ripple when faulted. For each specific aircraft application, a parametrical optimization of the suitable motor configuration is needed through a coupled electromagnetic and thermal analysis, and should be verified by finite-element analysis.

Overview of Electric Motor Technologies Used for More Electric Aircraft (MEA)

Power electronics plays an important role in a wide range of applications in order to achieve high efficiency and performance. Increasing efforts are being made to improve the reliability of power electronics systems to ensure compliance with more stringent constraints on cost, safety, and availability in different applications. This paper presents an overview of the major failure mechanisms of IGBT modules and their handling methods in power converter systems improving reliability. The major failure mechanisms of IGBT modules are presented first, and methods for predicting lifetime and estimating the junction temperature of IGBT modules are then discussed. Subsequently, different methods for detecting open- and short-circuit faults are presented. Finally, fault-tolerant strategies for improving the reliability of power electronic systems under field operation are explained and compared in terms of performance and cost.

Study and Handling Methods of Power IGBT Module Failures in Power Electronic Converter Systems

In this paper, a control scheme for multiphase induction motor drives is presented and assessed. This control scheme ensures the operation of a multiphase drive under an open-circuit phase fault that can occur in one or more phases at the same time. A fault-tolerant control strategy is developed. The mathematical analysis is based on the space vector representation of the multiphase system and is valid either in transient or steady-state operating conditions. The feasibility of the drive is verified by means of experimental tests carried out on a prototype of seven-phase induction motor.

Control of Multiphase Induction Motors With an Odd Number of Phases Under Open-Circuit Phase Faults

Fault tolerance is one of the most interesting features in stand-alone electric propulsion systems. Multiphase induction motor drives are presented like a better alternative to their three-phase counterparts because of their capability to withstand faulty situations, ensuring the postfault operation of the drive. Finite-control set model-based predictive control (FCS-MPC) has been introduced in the last decade like an interesting alternative to conventional controllers for the electrical torque and current regulation of multiphase drives. However, FCS-MPC strategies for multiphase drives with the ability to manage pre- and postfault operations have not been addressed at all. This paper proposes a fault-tolerant speed control for five-phase induction motor drives with the ability to run the system before and after an open-phase fault condition using an FCS-MPC strategy. Experimental results are provided in order to validate the functionality of the proposed control method, maintaining rated currents and ensuring fast and ripple-free torque response.

Speed Control of Five-Phase Induction Motors With Integrated Open-Phase Fault Operation Using Model-Based Predictive Current Control Techniques

In this paper, a novel failure-detection technique and its analog circuit for insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs), under open- and short-circuit failures, are proposed. This technique is applied to a three-phase induction-motor (IM) drive system. The detection technique is adapted to detect failures of short-circuit and open-circuit in the IGBT, which is based on gate-signal monitoring. The most important issue of this technique is the reduction of time for fault detection. This is very important in a failure-tolerant IM drive based on the material-redundancy approach or protection systems since the detection must be done before the device is damaged, in approximately less than 10 μs. The experimental test and simulations are presented in order to validate the proposed fault-detection technique, and it is validated, achieving replacement of the damaged element in the most suitable time.

A Failure-Detection Strategy for IGBT Based on Gate-Voltage Behavior Applied to a Motor Drive System

This paper describes an experimental tool to evaluate and support the development of fault-tolerant machines designed for aerospace motor drives. Aerospace applications involve essentially safety-critical systems which should be able to overcome hardware or software faults and therefore need to be fault tolerant. A way of achieving this is to introduce variable degrees of redundancy into the system by duplicating one or all of the operations within the system itself. Looking at motor drives, multiphase machines, such as multiphase brushless dc machines, are considered to be good candidates in the design of fault-tolerant aerospace motor drives. This paper introduces a multiphase two-level inverter using a flexible and reliable field-programmable gate-array/digital-signal-processor controller for data acquisition, motor control, and fault monitoring to study the fault tolerance of such systems.

Multiphase Power Converter Drive for Fault-Tolerant Machine Development in Aerospace Applications

Lightning protection elements consist of a grounding system. The grounding system's main task is to disburse the current into the earth safely. This research aims to lower the resistance, thus creating a good path for the grounding system using natural enhancement material as backfill material. Since the kenaf core is brittle, not dense and loose, therefore clay as a bonding agent is mixed as a backfill material. Various mixtures of clay and kenaf are filled in the acrylic box. The sample goes through the high voltage AC and DC levels until the sample breakdown reaches. The upper limit of voltage depends on the material and its condition, either dry or wet. The data records the temperature and relative humidity of the laboratory before running the testing. After every increment, high voltage AC will be applied constantly for ten seconds at the backfill material. The testing also observes any physical changes in the material. From HVAC and HVDC tests, kenaf shows high conductivity. The breakdown voltage considers higher when the percentage of kenaf mix is low. The results show that kenaf has high conductivity and is suitable for use as a natural enhancement material for grounding purposes.
