The authors have developed a high-speed solenoid valve with a 1 ms switching time to control diesel engines electronically. In this paper, the authors focused their attention on developing the solenoid itself, investigating methods to be used for the fast operation of the solenoid valve. First, by using a mathematical model, they quantitatively examined the effects of design particulars, such as the dimensions of the solenoids and the number of turns of coil, on the switching time. According to the results obtained by the above examinations, they studied an effective method for fast switching. Next, they investigated appropriate and comprehensive methods that would satisfy given specifications under the various restrictions inherent in the solenoid valve's operation. In the final stage, they manufactured solenoid valves in accordance with the investigated methods, and evaluated their performance. >

Dynamic modeling of solenoids is difficult because of the coupling of a nonlinear magnetic system, which includes eddy currents. The finite-element method has been successfully implemented to solve this complex problem. However, the large computer time requirements associated with numerical solutions make this approach cumbersome to use, especially during the design stage, where repeated design trials are necessary. Also, few papers refer to the deenergizing state of solenoids. By introducing appropriate assumptions, the author developed a set of equations which requires small amount of computer time to execute. These equations describe the deenergizing state of solenoids and perform test results satisfactorily. >

Numerical modelling of magnetic materials for computer aided design of electromagnetic devices

This paper presents an improved magnetic reluctivity model for vector magnetic properties of anisotropic electrical steel sheet based on Chua-type model using Fourier series expansion of measured B and H waveforms in the viewpoint of engineering application. In the modeling, B-spline surface interpolation is adopted to obtain smooth approximation of measured data. The accuracy of the proposed magnetic reluctivity model is verified by comparing its modeling results with experimentally measured B- and H-waveforms with 30 PG110 grain-oriented silicon steel sheet. The nonlinear finite element (FE) formulation is also derived to incorporate the proposed reluctivity model, and applied to magnetic field analysis of a single phase transformer core model. By comparing the numerical results with experimental ones, the effectiveness of the reluctivity model and FE formulation is investigated.

An Improved Engineering Model of Vector Magnetic Properties of Grain-Oriented Electrical Steels

This paper presents a generalized Chua-type vector hysteresis model to describe both the static and dynamic vector magnetic properties of electrical steel sheets. The proposed model takes into account all significant harmonic components of the measured H -waveforms, thus it provides precise prediction of H-waveforms even under highly saturated magnetic flux densities under alternating, rotating, and distorted magnetic fields conditions. The validity of the proposed vector hysteresis model was investigated by comparison to experimental results under various magnetic field conditions for both the non-oriented and grain-oriented silicon steel sheets.

A generalized Chua-type vector hysteresis model for both the non-oriented and grain-oriented electrical steel sheets

In order to calculate the magnetodynamic fields exactly, it is essential to work out a magnetization model. We have previously proposed a Chua‐type magnetization model based on magnetic domain theory. This Chua‐type model is now applied to typical ferromagnetic materials, such as iron, ferrite, and amorphous magnetic material. As a result, it is revealed that the typical magnetization characteristics of representative ferromagnetic materials can be satisfactory reproduced by our Chua‐type model.
