The relation between adiabatic shear instability strain and material properties
TL;DR: In this article, the onset of adiabatic shear instability was found experimentally to take place at a true shear strain γc = -Cn/(δτδT), where C is the volume specific heat, n is the strain hardening exponent and δτ/δ T is the slope of the temperature dependence of flow stress.

Plastic instability and flow localization in shear at high rates of deformation
TL;DR: In this article, the occurrence of adiabatic shear bands in metals is analyzed using models based on load instability and flow localization, and the predictive capabilities of the two types of model are compared using data on shear band formation during the explosive expansion of 4340 steel cylinders.
