The high-energy diffuse gamma-ray emission from the Galactic plane, |b| ≤ 10°, is studied using observations from the Energetic Gamma-Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory. The spatial distribution of the diffuse emission has been determined for four broad energy ranges after removing the contribution from point sources detected with greater than 5 σ significance. The longitude and latitude distributions of the intensity, averaged over 4° latitude ranges and 10° longitude ranges, respectively, are shown for the four energy ranges. Spectra of the diffuse emission in 11 energy bands, covering the energy range 30 MeV to 30 GeV, were determined for 10° × 4° (l × b) bins after correcting for the finite EGRET angular resolution. The average spectrum from the direction of the inner Galaxy is shown for 29 energy bands, covering the energy range 30 MeV to 50 GeV. At latitudes |b| > 2°, corresponding to gamma rays emitted within about 3 kpc of the Sun, there is no significant variation in the spectra with Galactic longitude. Comparison of the spectra from the Galactic plane (|b| < 2°) reveals no significant variation with Galactic longitude below about 4 GeV, which suggests that the cosmic-ray electron to proton ratio does not vary significantly throughout the Galaxy. Above 4 GeV, however, there is weak (about 3 σ) evidence for variation of the Galactic plane (|b| < 2°) spectrum with longitude. The spectrum is softer in the direction of the outer Galaxy by about E compared to the spectrum from the inner Galaxy. This variation of the diffuse gamma-ray emission hints at a variation of the cosmic-ray proton spectrum with Galactic radius, which might be expected if cosmic rays are accelerated primarily in the inner Galaxy and then propagate to the outer Galaxy or if the high-energy cosmic rays are confined less well in the outer Galaxy. The spatial and spectral distributions of the diffuse emission are compared with a model calculation of this emission based on dynamic balance and realistic interstellar matter and photon distributions. The spatial comparison is used to establish the value of the molecular mass calibrating ratio N(H2)/WCO and the cosmic-ray/matter coupling scale r0, which are the only adjustable parameters of the model. Comparisons with the observations indicates N(H2)/WCO = (1.56 ± 0.05) × 1020 mol cm-2 (K km s-1)-1 and r0 = (1.76 ± 0.2) kpc. The spatial agreement between this model and the observation is very good. However, above about 1 GeV the integral intensity predicted by the model is about 60% less than the observed intensity. Although the explanation of this excess is unclear, uncertainties in the neutral pion production function or variations in the cosmic-ray spectrum with Galactic radius may partially account for the underprediction. A small medium-latitude (2° < |b| < 10°) excess in the direction of the inner Galaxy exists and may indicate that the low-energy photon density used in the model is too low.

EGRET Observations of the Diffuse Gamma-Ray Emission from the Galactic Plane

We present a new model of high-energy light curves from rotation-powered pulsars. The key ingredient of the model is the gap region (i.e., the region where particle acceleration is taking place and high-energy photons originate) that satisfies the following assumptions: (1) the gap region extends from each polar cap to the light cylinder; (2) the gap is thin and confined to the surface of last open magnetic-field lines; (3) photon emissivity is uniform within the gap region. The model light curves are dominated by strong peaks (either double or single) of caustic origin. Unlike other pulsar models with caustic effects, the double peaks arise from a crossing two caustics, each of which is associated with a different magnetic pole. The generic features of the light curves are consistent with the observed characteristics of pulsar light curves: (1) the most natural (in terms of probability) shape consists of two peaks (separated by 0.4 to 0.5 in phase for large viewing angles); (2) the peaks possess well-developed wings; (3) there is a bridge (interpeak) emission component; (4) there is a nonvanishing off-pulse emission level; (5) the radio pulse occurs before the leading high-energy peak. The model is well suited for four gamma-ray pulsars?Crab, Vela, Geminga, and B1951+32?with double-peak light curves exhibiting the peak separation of 0.4 to 0.5 in phase. Here we apply the model to the Vela pulsar. Moreover, we indicate the limitation of the model in accurate reproducing of the light curves with single pulses and narrowly separated (about 0.2 in phase) pulse peaks. We also discuss the optical polarization properties for the Crab pulsar in the context of the two-pole caustic model.

Two-Pole Caustic Model for High-Energy Light Curves of Pulsars

A three-dimensional pulsar magnetosphere model is used to study the geometry of outer magnetospheric gap accelerators, following seminal work of Romani and coworkers. The size of the outer gap is self-consistently limited by pair production from collisions of thermal photons from polar cap heating of backflow outer gap current with curvature photons emitted by gap-accelerated charged particles. In principle, there could be two topologically disconnected outer gaps. Conditions for local pair production such as local field line curvature, soft X-ray density, electric field, etc., support pair production inside an outer gap only between rin() (the radius of the null surface at azimuthal angle ) and rlim() ≈ 6rin( = 0) RL (the light cylinder radius). Secondary pairs, on the other hand, are produced almost everywhere outside the outer gap by collisions between curvature photons and synchrotron X-rays emitted by these secondary pairs. These processes produce a wide X-ray fan beam in the outgoing direction and a very narrow beam in the incoming direction for each outer gap. For pulsars with a large magnetic dipole inclination angle, part of the incoming γ-ray beam will be absorbed by the stellar magnetic field. If the surface magnetic field is dominated by a far off-center dipole moment (e.g., as in a proposed "plate tectonic" model), gravitational bending of photons from polar cap accelerators and their ultimate conversion into outflowing e± pairs can result in the quenching of one of these two outer gaps. Various emission morphologies for the pulsar (depending on magnetic inclination angle and viewing angle) are presented. Double-peak light curves with strong bridges are most common. From the three-dimensional structure of the outer gap and its local properties, we calculate phase-resolved spectra of gamma-ray pulsars and apply them to observed spectra of the Crab pulsar.

A three-dimensional outer magnetospheric gap model for gamma-ray pulsars: Geometry, pair production, emission morphologies, and phase-resolved spectra

The telescopes on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CCRO) have observed PSR B1055-52 a number of times between 1991 and 1998. From these data, a more detailed picture of the gamma radiation from this source has been developed, showing several characteristics which distinguish this pulsar: the light curve is complex; there is no detectable unpulsed emission; the energy spectrum is flat, with no evidence of a sharp high-energy cutoff up to greater than 4 GeV. Comparisons of the gamma-ray data with observations at longer wavelengths show that no two of the known gamma-ray pulsars have quite the same characteristics; this diversity makes interpretation in terms of theoretical models difficult.

Gamma Radiation from PSR B1055–52

Timing observations of 40 mostly young pulsars using the ATNF Parkes radio telescope between 1990 January and 1998 December are reported. In total, 20 previously unreported glitches and 10 other glitches were detected in 11 pulsars, These included 12 glitches in PSR J1341-6220, corresponding to a glitch rate of 1.5 glitches per year. We also detected the largest known glitch, in PSR J1614-5047, with Delta nu(g)/nu approximate to 6.5 X 10(-6), where nu = 1/P is the pulse frequency. Glitch parameters were determined both by extrapolating timing solutions to interglitch intervals and by phase-coherent timing fits across the glitch(es), These fits also give improved positions and dispersion measures for many of the pulsars, Analysis of glitch parameters, both from this work and from previously published results, shows that most glitches have a fractional amplitude Delta nu(g)/nu of between 10(-8) and 10(-6). There is no consistent relationship between glitch amplitude and the time since the previous glitch or the time to the following glitch, either for the ensemble or for individual pulsars. As previously recognized, the largest glitch activity is seen in pulsars with ages of order 10(4) yr, but for about 30 per cent of such pulsars, no glitches were detected in the 8-year data span. There is some evidence for a new type of timing irregularity in which there is a significant increase in pulse frequency over a few days, accompanied by a decrease in the magnitude of the slowdown rate. Fits of an exponential recovery to post-glitch data show that for most older pulsars, only a small fraction of the glitch decays. In some younger pulsars a large fraction of the glitch decays, but in others there is very little decay. Apart from the Crab pulsar, there is no clear dependence of recovery time-scale on pulsar age.
