Programmable shaping of femtosecond pulses by using a 128-element liquid crystal modulator to manipulate the phases of optical frequency components which are spatially dispersed within a grating-and-lens pulse shaping apparatus is described. This apparatus makes possible gray-level control of the spectral phases and allows modification of the pulse shape on a millisecond time scale under electronic control. Refinements in the design of the multielement modulator result in pulse shaping fidelity comparable to that which can be achieved with microlithographically fabricated masks. Several examples of pulse shaping operation, including pulse position modulation, programmable pulse compression, and adjustable cubic phase distortion, are described. >

Femtosecond optical pulse shaping and processing

In this work, we show how broad-bandwidth femtosecond pulses can be used to achieve high spectral resolution in nonlinear spectroscopy and microscopy. Our approach is based on chirping the excitation pulses in order to focus their entire bandwidth into a narrow spectral region. We show that spectral features which are 100 times narrower than the excitation light can be resolved with this simple spectral focusing. The gain in spectral selectivity and sensitivity makes its application to nonlinear microscopy very convenient. This is demonstrated with diffraction-limited coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering microscopy.

Spectral focusing: High spectral resolution spectroscopy with broad-bandwidth laser pulses

This paper reports comprehensive experimental results on a femtosecond code-division multiple-access (CDMA) communication system test bed operating over optical fiber in the 1.5 /spl mu/m communication band. Our test bed integrates together several novel subsystems, including low-loss fiber-pigtailed pulse shapers for encoding-decoding, use of dispersion equalizing fibers in dispersion compensated links for femtosecond pulse transmission and also in femtosecond chirped pulse amplification (CPA) erbium doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs), and high-contrast nonlinear fiber-optic thresholders. The individual subsystems are described, and single-user system level experimental results demonstrating the ability to transmit spectrally encoded femtosecond pulses over a 2.5-km dispersion compensated fiber link followed by decoding and high contrast nonlinear thresholding are presented.

A femtosecond code-division multiple-access communication system test bed

We recently introduced frequency-resolved optical gating (FROG), a technique for measuring the intensity and phase of an individual, arbitrary, ultrashort laser pulse. FROG can use almost any instantaneous optical nonlinearity, with the most common geometries being polarization gate, self-diffraction, and second-harmonic generation. The experimentally generated FROG trace is intuitive, visually appealing, and can yield quantitative information about the pulse parameters (such as temporal and spectral width and chirp). However, the qualitative and the quantitative features of the FROG trace depend strongly on the geometry used. We compare the FROG traces for several common ultrashort pulses for these three common geometries and, where possible, develop scaling rules that allow one to obtain quantitative information about the pulse directly from the experimental FROG trace. We illuminate the important features of the various FROG traces for transform-limited, linearly chirped, self-phase modulated, and nonlinearly chirped pulses, pulses with simultaneous linear chirp and self-phase modulation, and pulses with simultaneous linear chirp and cubic phase distortion, as well as double pulses, pulses with phase jumps, and pulses with complex intensity and phase substructure.

Comparison of ultrashort-pulse frequency-resolved-optical-gating traces for three common beam geometries

Subpicosecond optical pulses propagating in single-mode fibers are severely distorted by third-order dispersion even at the fiber's zero-dispersion wavelength ( lambda /sub 0/). Using cross-correlation techniques, the authors measured the broadening of a 100-fs pulse to more than 5 ps after passing through 400 m of fiber near lambda /sub 0/. The measured asymmetric and oscillatory pulse shape is in agreement with calculations. A grating and telescope apparatus was configured to simultaneously equalize both third- and second-order dispersion for wavelengths slightly longer than lambda /sub 0/. Nearly complete compensation has been demonstrated for fiber lengths of 400 m and 3 km of dispersion-shifted fiber at wavelengths of 1560-1580 nm. For the longer fibers, fourth-order dispersion due to the grating becomes important. >
