OBJECTIVE: In 1996, the Brazilian cardiovascular surgeon, Dr. Randas Batista, introduced a surgical technique called partial left ventriculectomy, where he admitted the possibility of reducing the diameter of the left ventricle through the sectioning of one section of its wall. After the publication of this study, thousands of case reports and procedure analysis have been published, and due to several disappointing results, many doctors and institutions failed to execute it. As the main objective of this study, stands out the search for success cases of ventriculectomy in the last 12 years and if during this period it was achieved some significant development in this procedure that allows obtaining lower mortality rate postoperatively. METHODS: Systematic review of indexed scientific literature over the past 12 years and the term "Partial Left Ventriculectomy". RESULTS: There has been a considerable number of reported successful cases and highly significant findings in regard to determining the most suitable region for the section, proper selection of the patients indicated to the procedure, including the influence of the coronary artery anatomy in the nomination procedure and the need for preservation of ventricular geometry to ensure better quality of ventricular contractions after the sectioning. CONCLUSION: This surgical procedure has been successfully performed, mainly in Japan, improvements in its efficiency were found and the need for a mathematical modeling of the slice to be severed is a prominent factor in many studies.

La formacion de un pseudoaneurisma es una complicacion que puede pasar inadvertida pero con gran potencial de aumentar la morbilidad del paciente en caso de rotura. Esta reportado que incluso 15% de los reingresos hospitalarios de pacientes nefropatas se relacionan con complicaciones del acceso vascular. El pseudoaneurisma es una complicacion que puede permanecer subdiagnosticada por personal no familiarizado con la angiologia; por esto es indispensable la implantacion de programas multidisciplinarios para la atencion de pacientes nefropatas cronicos terminales. A partial left ventriculectomy (Batista operation) is extremely unusual in infants. Follow-up data are unknown. We report the findings at long-term follow-up in an infant after the Batista procedure, following reimplantation of an anomalous coronary artery. Batista Procedure for a Coronary Anomaly in an Infant: Long-Term Follow-Up.

A four-month-old infant with anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery developed severe left ventricular failure after aortic reimplantation, despite prolonged supportive cardiopulmonary bypass with high level inotropic support and several abortive attempts for discontinuation. The Batista procedure was performed and the patient was successfully weaned from bypass. Postoperative recovery was uneventful, and at one-year follow-up she remains asymptomatic. Pseudoaneurisma gigante de fístula arteriovenosa humeral autóloga: reparación quirúrgica

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Air leak syndrome is an uncommon complication for viral infections in pediatric patients and has been associated with pneumothoraces, empyemas, necrotizing pneumonias, barotrauma, and other underlying lung diseases. We present a case series of three patients with Coronavirus infections that developed severe air leak syndrome, two of which were placed on venovenous-extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO). METHOD(S): Patient 1 (Pt1) is a 6-month-old male with a history of prematurity presenting with fever, cough, and respiratory failure with severe air leak syndrome requiring VV-ECMO support with SARS-CoV2. Patient 2 (Pt2) is a previously healthy 19-month-old female presenting with fever, cough, and respiratory failure with multiple pneumatoceles and pneumothoraces in the setting of coronavirus-OC43 requiring VV-ECMO support. Patient 3 (Pt3) is a previously healthy 25-day-old infant presenting with shock, cyanosis, apnea, multiple pneumothoraces and pneumatoceles, and subsequent respiratory failure with SARS-CoV2. RESULT(S): Pt1 and Pt2 developed multiple pneumothoraces with tension physiology and severe hypoxemia from necrotizing pneumonia with severe air leak, requiring multiple chest tubes, JET ventilation, and ultimately VV-ECMO support (see Figure 1). Pt3 developed multiple loculated pneumothoraces that necessitated surgically-placed chest tubes for decompression and JET ventilation for a 3+ week course. CONCLUSION(S): These cases highlight severe air leak syndromes as an infrequent and life-threatening complication correlated with Coronavirus infections. Viral illnesses such as SARS-CoV2 and Corona-OC43 and their associated multiorgan system disease have more recently impacted a larger number of pediatric patients and must be further evaluated to better understand underlying etiologies and compare management strategies.
