Hybrid and electric vehicle technology has seen rapid development in recent years. The motor and the generator are at the heart of the vehicle drive and energy system and often utilize expensive rare-earth permanent magnet (PM) material. This paper reviews and addresses the research work that has been carried out to reduce the amount of rare-earth material that is used while maintaining the high efficiency and performance that rare-earth PM machines offer. These new machines can use either less rare-earth PM material, weaker ferrite magnets, or no magnets; and they need to meet the high performance that the more usual interior PM synchronous motor with sintered neodymium-iron-boron magnets provides. These machines can take the form of PM-assisted synchronous reluctance machines, induction machines, switched reluctance machines, wound rotor synchronous machines (claw pole or biaxially excited), double-saliency machines with ac or dc stator current control, or brushless dc multiple-phase reluctance machines.

Automotive Electric Propulsion Systems With Reduced or No Permanent Magnets: An Overview

This paper presents a critical review of the drivelines in all-electric vehicles (EVs). The motor topologies that are the best candidates to be used in EVs are presented. The advantages and disadvantages of each electric motor type are discussed from a system perspective. A survey of the electric motors used in commercial EVs is presented. The survey shows that car manufacturers are very conservative when it comes to introducing new technologies. Most of the EVs on the market mount a single induction or permanent-magnet (PM) motor with a traditional mechanic driveline with a differential. This paper illustrates that comparisons between the different motors are difficult by the large number of parameters and the lack of a recommended test scheme. The authors propose that a standardized drive cycle be used to test and compare motors.

Electrical Motor Drivelines in Commercial All-Electric Vehicles: A Review

With rapid electrification of transportation, it is becoming increasingly important to have a comprehensive understanding of criteria used in motor selection. This paper presents the design and comparative evaluation for an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) with distributed winding and concentrated winding, induction motor (IM), and switched reluctance motor (SRM) for an electric vehicle (EV) or hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) application. A fast finite element analysis (FEA) modeling approach is addressed for IM design. To account for highly nonlinear motor parameters and achieve high motor efficiency, optimal current trajectories are obtained by extensive mapping for IPMSMs and IM. Optimal turn- on and turn- off angles with current chopping control and angular position control are found for SRM. Additional comparison including noise vibration and harshness (NVH) is also highlighted. Simulation and analytical results show that each motor topology demonstrates its own unique characteristic for EVs/HEVs. Each motor’s highest efficiency region is located at different torque-speed regions for the criteria defined. Stator geometry, pole/slot combination, and control strategy differentiate NVH performance.

Comparative Study of Interior Permanent Magnet, Induction, and Switched Reluctance Motor Drives for EV and HEV Applications

As a kind of traction device, interior permanent-magnet synchronous machines (IPMSMs) are widely used in modern electric vehicles. This paper performs a design and comparative study of IPMSMs with different rotor topologies (spoke-type PMs, tangential-type PMs, U-shape PMs, and V-shape PMs). The research results indicate that the IPMSM with V-shape PMs is more satisfying with comprehensive consideration. Furthermore, the IPMSM with V-shape PMs is investigated in detail. The influences of geometrical parameters (magnetic bridge and angle between the two V-shape PMs under each pole, etc.) on the performances of V-shape motor are evaluated based on finite-element method (FEM). For accurate research, the effects of saturation, cross-magnetization, and the change in PM flux linkage on d - and q -axis inductances are considered. The back-electromotive force (EMF), flux leakage coefficient, average torque, torque ripple, cogging torque, power per unit volume, power factor, and flux-weakening ability are investigated, respectively. The experimental results verify the validity and accuracy of the process presented in this paper.

Research on the Performances and Parameters of Interior PMSM Used for Electric Vehicles

Selection of the proper electric traction drive is an important step in design and performance optimization of electrified powertrains. Due to the use of high energy magnets, permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSM) have been the primary choice in the electric traction motor market. However, manufacturers are very interested to find a permanent magnet-free alternative as a fallback option due to unstable cost of rare-earth metals and fault tolerance issues related to the constant permanent magnet excitation. In this paper, a new comprehensive review of electric machines (EMs) that includes various new switched reluctance machine topologies in addition to conventional EMs such as PMSM, induction machine, synchronous reluctance machine (SynRel), and PM-assisted SynRel is presented. This paper is based on performances such as power density, efficiency, torque ripple, vibration and noise, and fault tolerance. These systematic examinations prove that recently proposed magnetic configurations such as double-stator switched reluctance machine can be a reasonable substitute for permanent magnet machines in electric traction applications.

Opportunities and Challenges of Switched Reluctance Motor Drives for Electric Propulsion: A Comparative Study

This paper describes a comparative study allowing the selection of the most appropriate electric-propulsion system for a parallel hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). This paper is based on an exhaustive review of the state of the art and on an effective comparison of the performances of the four main electric-propulsion systems, namely the dc motor, the induction motor (IM), the permanent magnet synchronous motor, and the switched reluctance motor. The main conclusion drawn by the proposed comparative study is that it is the cage IM that better fulfills the major requirements of the HEV electric propulsion

Electric Motor Drive Selection Issues for HEV Propulsion Systems: A Comparative Study

This paper describes active fault-tolerant control systems for a high-performance induction-motor drive that propels an electrical vehicle (EV) or a hybrid one (HEV). The proposed systems adaptively reorganize themselves in the event of sensor loss or sensor recovery to sustain the best control performance, given the complement of remaining sensors. Moreover, the developed systems take into account the controller-transition smoothness, in terms of speed and torque transients. The two proposed fault-tolerant control strategies have been simulated on a 4-kW induction-motor drive, and speed and torque responses have been carried to evaluate the consistency and the performance of the proposed approaches. Simulation results, in terms of speed and torque responses, show the global effectiveness of the proposed approaches, particularly the one based on modern and intelligent control techniques in terms of speed and torque smoothness

This paper describes an active fault-tolerant control system for an induction motor drive that propels an Electrical Vehicle (EV) or a Hybrid one (HEV). The proposed system adaptively reorganizes itself in the event of sensor loss or sensor recovery to sustain the best control performance given the complement of remaining sensors. Moreover, the developed system takes into account the controller transition smoothness in terms of speed and torque transients. In this paper which is the sequel of (Diallo et al., 2004), we propose to introduce more advanced and intelligent control techniques to improve the global performance of the fault-tolerant drive for automotive applications (e.g. EVs or HEVs). In fact, two control techniques are chosen to illustrate the consistency of the proposed approach: sliding mode for encoder-based control; and fuzzy logics for sensorless control. Moreover, the system control reorganization is now managed by a fuzzy decision system to improve the transitions smoothness. Simulations tests, in terms of speed and torque responses, have been carried out on a 4㎾ induction motor drive to evaluate the consistency and the performance of the proposed fault-tolerant control approach.
