This is the oldest English language journal in genetics. Founded by W. Bateson and R. C. Punnett in 1910, the Journal of Genetics was later edited by J. B. S. Haldane; later, Haldane and his wife, Helen Spurway brought the journal with them to India. After his death in 1964, Mrs. Haldane continued publication of the journal, with Madhav Gadgil and H. Sharat Chandra (Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore) and Suresh Jayakar (Laboratorio de Genetica Biochimica ed Evoluzionistica, Pavia) as editors, until her own death in 1977. In 1985, with the permission of Haldane’s heirs, the Indian Academy of Sciences resumed publication of the journal. The journal retains its traditional interest in evolutionary research that is of relevance to geneticists, even if not explicitly genetic in nature.

Illumina paired-end sequencing technology produced over 53 million sequencing reads from C nankingense mRNA The subsequent de novo assembly yielded 70,895 unigenes, of which 45,789 (6459%) unigenes showed similarity to the sequences in NCBI database Out of 45,789 sequences, 107 have hits to the Chrysanthemum Nr protein database; 679 and 277 sequences have hits to the database of Helianthus and Lactuca species, respectively MISA software identified a large number of putative EST-SSRs, allowing 1,788 primer pairs to be designed from the de novo transcriptome sequence and a further 363 from archival EST sequence Among 100 primer pairs randomly chosen, 81 markers have amplicons and 20 are polymorphic for genotypes analysis in Chrysanthemum The results showed that most (but not all) of the assays were transferable across species and that they exposed a significant amount of allelic diversity


Conclusions/Significance 
SSR markers acquired by transcriptome sequencing are potentially useful for marker-assisted breeding and genetic analysis in the genus Chrysanthemum and its related genera

Chrysanthemum zawadskii showed 2n=54 (hexaploid chromosme number) and extensive variation in the color of the ligules (from white to pinkish). FISH yellow colored signals of the 5S, 45S rDNA and telomeres were obtained after hybridized of the biotin labeled of the 5S rDNA, pTa71 and telomeric sequence repeats probes to somatic chromosomes. They showed 5-6 interstitial and two terminal signals at the 5S rDNA region, 10-14 terminal and 4-5 interstitial signals at the 45S rDNA region and the telomeric signals at the region of telomeric sequence repeats on both chromosome arms in the chromosome complement. Bicolor FISH showed that co-localization of the 5S and 45S rDNA on two terminal and five interstitial loci. This phenomenon might indicate a natural hybridization with closely related genera and/or genome rearrangement.

The genomes of Leucanthemella linearis (2n=18) and Nipponanthemum nipponicum (2n=18) were studied in the chromosome complement of their F1 hybrid (2n=18) during meiosis and mitosis by DNA in situ hybridization and fluorochrome banding. Genomic in situ hybridization (GISH) using the total genomic DNA of N. nipponicum as a probe showed that the parental genomes in the chromosome complement of the hybrid were generally in separate domains during meiosis. Chromosome translocations were encountered and 18 univalents were usually observed at diakinesis and metaphase I. Meiotic abnormalities of chromosomes such as bridges, laggards and fragments were manifested mainly in the genome of L. linearis and after fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH)using the 45S rDNA pTa71 probe showed that the parental genomes were differentiable in the hybrid.
