The division of thermodynamic solvation free energies of electrolytes into contributions from individual ionic constituents is conventionally accomplished by using the single-ion solvation free energy of one reference ion, conventionally the proton, to set the single-ion scales. Thus, the determination of the free energy of solvation of the proton in various solvents is a fundamental issue of central importance in solution chemistry. In the present article, relative solvation free energies of ions and ion−solvent clusters in methanol, acetonitrile, and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) have been determined using a combination of experimental and theoretical gas-phase free energies of formation, solution-phase reduction potentials and acid dissociation constants, and gas-phase clustering free energies. Single-Ion Solvation Free Energies and the Normal Hydrogen Electrode Potential in Methanol, Acetonitrile, and Dimethyl Sulfoxide

This paper reviews several pKa calculation strategies that are commonly used in aqueous acidity predictions. Among those investigated were the direct or absolute method, the proton exchange scheme, and the hybrid cluster–continuum (Pliego and Riveros) and implicit–explicit (Kelly, Cramer and Truhlar) models. Additionally, these protocols are applied in the pKa calculation of 55 neutral organic and inorganic acids in conjunction with various solvent models, including the CPCM-UAKS/UAHF, IPCM, SM6 and COSMO-RS, with a view to identifying a universal approach for accurate pKa predictions. The results indicate that the direct method is unsuitable for general pKa calculations, although moderately accurate results (MAD <3 units) are possible for certain classes of acids, depending on the choice of solvent model. The proton exchange scheme generally delivers good results (MAD <2 units), with CPCM-UAKS giving the best performance. Furthermore, the sensitivity of this approach to the choice of reference acid can be substantially lessened if the solvation energies for ionic species are calculated via the IPCM cluster–continuum approach. Reference-independent hybrid approaches that include explicit water molecules can potentially give reasonably accurate values (MAD generally ~2 units) depending on the solvent model and the number of explicit water molecules added.

A universal approach for continuum solvent pK a calculations: are we there yet?

Aqueous acid dissociation free energies for a diverse set of 57 monoprotic acids have been calculated using a combination of experimental and calculated gas and liquid-phase free energies. For ionic species, aqueous solvation free energies were calculated using the recently developed SM6 continuum solvation model (Kelly, C. P.; Cramer, C. J.; Truhlar, D. G. J. Chem. Theory Comput. 2005, 1, 1133). This model combines a dielectric continuum with atomic surface tensions to account for bulk solvent effects. For some of the acids studied, a combined approach that involves attaching a single explicit water molecule to the conjugate base (anion), and then surrounding the resulting anion−water cluster by a dielectric continuum, significantly improves the agreement between the calculated pKa value and experiment. Adding Explicit Solvent Molecules to Continuum Solvent Calculations for the Calculation of Aqueous Acid Dissociation Constants

This article reviews recent developments and applications in the area of computational electrochemistry. Our focus is on predicting the reduction potentials of electron transfer and other electrochemical reactions and half-reactions in both aqueous and nonaqueous solutions. Topics covered include various computational protocols that combine quantum mechanical electronic structure methods (such as density functional theory) with implicit-solvent models, explicit-solvent protocols that employ Monte Carlo or molecular dynamics simulations (for example, Car–Parrinello molecular dynamics using the grand canonical ensemble formalism), and the Marcus theory of electronic charge transfer. We also review computational approaches based on empirical relationships between molecular and electronic structure and electron transfer reactivity. The scope of the implicit-solvent protocols is emphasized, and the present status of the theory and future directions are outlined.

Computational electrochemistry: prediction of liquid-phase reduction potentials

BODIPY (boron dipyrromethene) dyes are unique materials with spectroscopic and electrochemical properties comparable to those of aromatic hydrocarbons. Electrochemical studies are useful in understanding the redox properties of these materials and finding structure-stability relations for the radical ions; along with spectroscopy, these studies help researchers design novel compounds with desired properties. This Account represents our attempt at a full description of the electrochemical and electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) properties of the BODIPY dyes. When the dyes are completely substituted with alkyl or other groups, the radical ions of BODIPY dyes are highly stable. But if they include unsubstituted positions, the radical ions can undergo dimerization or other reactions. BODIPY dyes also show unusually large separations, ~1.0 V, between the first and second cyclic voltammetric (CV) waves for both oxidation and reduction half-reactions. Alkyl-substituted BODIPY dyes show good photoluminescence (PL) quantum efficiencies, and radical ion electron transfer annihilation in these molecules produces electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL), the intensity of which depends on the structure of the dye. The large separation between waves and the presence of strong ECL signals are both important in the design of stable ECL-based materials. The ECL spectra provide a fast method of monitoring the electrochemical formation of dimers and aggregates from the monomers. BODIPY dyes are particularly good systems for studying stepwise electron transfer in their chemically synthesized oligomers and polymers because of the small separation between the first oxidation and first reduction waves, generally about 2.0-2.4 V, and their relative ease of reduction compared with many other aromatic compounds. The larger separation between consecutive waves for oxidation compared with reduction is noticeable for all BODIPY dimers and trimers. We also observe a more difficult addition or extraction of a third electron compared with the second for the trimers, signaling the importance of electrostatic interactions. In general, BODIPY dyes combine interesting electrochemical and spectroscopic properties that suggest useful analytical applications.

Electrochemistry and electrogenerated chemiluminescence of BODIPY dyes

Single-molecule studies that allow to compute pK a values, proton affinities (gas-phase acidity/basicity) and the electrostatic energy of solvation have been performed for a heterogeneous set of 26 organic compounds. Quantum mechanical density functional theory (DFT) using the Becke-half&half and B3LYP functionals on optimized molecular geometries have been carried out to investigate the energetics of gas-phase protonation. The electrostatic contribution to the solvation energies of protonated and deprotonated compounds were calculated by solving the Poisson equation using atomic charges generated by fitting the electrostatic potential derived from the molecular wave functions in vacuum. The combination of gas-phase and electrostatic solvation energies by means of the thermodynamic cycle enabled us to compute pK a values for the 26 compounds, which cover six distinct chemical groups (carboxylic acids, benzoic acids, phenols, imides, pyridines and imidazoles). The computational procedure for determining pK a values is accurate and transferable with a rootmean-square deviation of 0.53 and 0.57 pK a units and a maximum error of 1.0 pK a and 1.3 pK a units for Becke-half&half and B3 LYP DFT functionals, respectively.

Accurate pKa Determination for a Heterogeneous Group of Organic Molecules

We estimated one-electron reduction potentials of redox-active organic molecules for a spectrum of eight different functional groups (phenoxyl, p-benzoquinone, phenylthiyl, p-benzodithiyl, carboxyl, benzoyloxyl, carbthiyl, and benzoylthiyl) in protic (water) and aprotic (acetonitrile, N,N-dimethylacetamide) solvents.
