We report the generation and characterization of the most complete collection of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) maintained and updated, for the first time, by the Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre (CCDC). To set up this subset, we asked the question “what is a MOF?” and implemented a number of “look-for-MOF” criteria embedded within a bespoke Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) Python API workflow to identify and extract information on 69 666 MOF materials. The CSD MOF subset is updated regularly with subsequent MOF additions to the CSD, bringing a unique record for all researchers working in the area of porous materials around the world, whether to perform high-throughput computational screening for materials discovery or to have a global view over the existing structures in a single resource. Development of a Cambridge Structural Database Subset: A Collection of Metal-Organic Frameworks for Past, Present, and Future

Macrocycles are molecular entities that display a combination of molecular recognition and complexation properties with vital implications for host–guest/supramolecular chemistry. Since the accidental discovery of the crown ethers by Pedersen half a century ago, the chemistry of wholly synthetic macrocycles for structure-specific, highly selective, host–guest complexation has experienced rapid development. While the structural diversity and host–guest chemistry of the original macrocycles are well-known, new derivatives of them are being investigated continuously and reported on today in order to improve their recognition properties as well as to unleash new opportunities in supramolecular chemistry. In this Review, we survey the recent developments of the chemistry of naturally occurring cyclodextrins, along with a variety of synthetic flexible and rigid macrocycles that have drawn their inspiration from Pedersen's ground-breaking discovery of crown ethers in the mid-1960s.

Surveying macrocyclic chemistry: from flexible crown ethers to rigid cyclophanes

A layerlike MOF (MIL-124, orGa2(OH)4(C9O6H4)) has been prepared and chosen as a parent compound to encapsulate Eu3+ cations by one uncoordinated carbonyl group in its pores. The Eu3+-incorporated sample (Eu3+@MIL-124) is fully characterized, which shows excellent luminescence and good fluorescence stability in water or other organic solvents. Subsequently, we choose Eu3+@MIL-124 as sensitive probe for sensing metal ions, anions, and organic small molecules because of its robust framework. Studying of the luminescence properties reveals that the complex Eu3+@MIL-124 was developed as a highly selective and sensitive probe for detection of Fe3+ (detection limit, 0.28 μM) and Fe2+ ions through fluorescence quenching of Eu3+ and MOF over other metal ions. In connection to this, a probable sensing mechanism was also discussed in this paper. There is an almost unlimited number of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). This creates exciting opportunities but also poses a problem: how do we quickly find the best MOFs for a given application? Molecular simulations have advanced sufficiently that many MOF properties – especially structural and gas adsorption properties – can be predicted computationally, and molecular modeling techniques are now used increasingly to guide the synthesis of new MOFs. With increasing computational power and improved simulation algorithms, it has become possible to conduct high-throughput computational screening to identify promising MOF structures and uncover structure–property relations. We review these efforts and discuss future directions in this new field.

High-throughput computational screening of metal-organic frameworks.

A series of bio-compatible metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been studied as potential carriers for drug delivery applications. Grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations were performed to study the adsorption of the model drug ibuprofen. Simulations were first validated with available experimental data for ibuprofen adsorption and release in MIL-53, MIL-100 and MIL-101. In the second stage, the study was extended to three additional MOFs with interesting properties in terms of bio-compatibility and porosity: CDMOF-1, based on edible precursors; MOF-74 containing a highly biocompatible metal (Mg); and BioMOF-100, a mesoporous MOF with extremely high pore volume. By comparing with experimental data, we show how GCMC simulation is able to predict the macroscopic performance of new porous MOFs in drug delivery applications, providing useful molecular-level insights and giving thermodynamic and structural details of the process. Adsorption isotherms, snapshots, energy of adsorption and radial distribution functions were used to analyse the drug delivery process.

Screening of bio-compatible metal–organic frameworks as potential drug carriers using Monte Carlo simulations

We revisit the problem of excluded volume deposition of rigid rods of length k unit cells over square lattices. Two new features are introduced: (a) two new short-distance complementary order parameters, called Π and Σ, are defined, calculated, and discussed to deal with the phases present as coverage increases; (b) the interpretation is now done beginning at the high-coverage ordered phase which allows us to interpret the low-coverage nematic phase as an ergodicity breakdown present only when k≥7. In addition the data analysis invokes both mutability (dynamical information theory method) and Shannon entropy (static distribution analysis) to further characterize the phases of the system. Moreover, mutability and Shannon entropy are compared, and we report the advantages and disadvantages they present for their use in this problem.
