The End of History and the Last Man

Identifying interesting relationships between pairs of variables in large data sets is increasingly important. Here, we present a measure of dependence for two-variable relationships: the maximal information coefficient (MIC). MIC captures a wide range of associations both functional and not, and for functional relationships provides a score that roughly equals the coefficient of determination (R2) of the data relative to the regression function. MIC belongs to a larger class of maximal information-based nonparametric exploration (MINE) statistics for identifying and classifying relationships. We apply MIC and MINE to data sets in global health, gene expression, major-league baseball, and the human gut microbiota and identify known and novel relationships.

Detecting Novel Associations in Large Data Sets

The emergence of global history has been one of the more notable features of academic history over the past three decades. Although historians of disease were among the pioneers of one of its earlier incarnations—world history—the recent “global turn” has made relatively little impact on histories of health, disease, and medicine. Most continue to be framed by familiar entities such as the colony or nation-state or are confined to particular medical “traditions.” This article aims to show what can be gained from taking a broader perspective. Its purpose is not to replace other ways of seeing or to write a new “grand narrative” but to show how transnational and transimperial approaches are vital to understanding some of the key issues with which historians of health, disease, and medicine are concerned. Moving on from an analysis of earlier periods of integration, the article offers some reflections on our own era of globalization and on the emerging field of global health.

Encountering development: the making and unmaking of the Third World

This interview with Ligia Bahia explores evaluations of the first 25 years of Brazil’s Sistema Unico de Saude (SUS) and analyzes the project’s progress, impasses, and missteps. Bahia is critical of both tendencies currently found within SUS: the one that sees the system as aimed at equity and the other posing equality as its goal. She criticizes the ambivalence that various spheres of government have displayed in their decisions regarding large corporate groups and private health insurance plans, which conflict with the ideas of SUS. She evaluates the participation of doctors and other healthcare professionals in the system. Lastly, she analyzes the emergence of identity politics, which are missing from the public health reform project, whose emphasis was on equality.

La lucha contra la segregación social en la atención de salud en América Latina

El objetivo de este trabajo de revision es proporcionar un panorama historico del desarrollo de las politicas de poblacion en el Peru, concentrandose especialmente en el papel de medicos y sanitaristas nacionales y de las agencias extranjeras en los ultimos cuarenta anos. El argumento del trabajo es que estas politicas han estado caracterizadas por la discontinuidad –principalmente por razones politicas- lo que ha llevado a los actores institucionales nacionales que participan en ellas a ser debiles, a que tengan poca capacidad de negociacion con los donantes internacionales y a un constante regreso a temas que parecian haber sido resueltos en el pasado. El no haber comprendido y superado la inconsistencia de este patron historico explica en parte las dificultades de estas politicas por mantenerse como una prioridad en la agenda nacional. Este es un trabajo de corte historico basado en una revision de documentos y periodicos asi como en entrevistas en profundidad con algunos de los protagonistas de las politicas de poblacion en el pais.
