The Spiritual Revolution: Why Religion is Giving Way to Spirituality

This book explores the recent trend toward the transformation of religious symbols and practices into culture in Western democracies. Analyses of three legal cases involving religion in the public sphere are used to illuminate this trend: a municipal council chamber; a town hall; and town board meetings. Each case  involves a different national context—Canada, France and the United States—and each illustrates something interesting about the shape-shifting nature of religion, specifically its flexibility and dexterity in the face of the secular, the religious and the plural. Despite the differences in national contexts, in each instance religion is transformed into culture or heritage by the courts to justify or excuse its presence and to distance the state from the possibility that it is violating legal norms of distance from religion. The cultural practice or symbol is represented as a shared national value or activity. Transforming the ‘Other’ into ‘Us’ through reconstitution is also possible. Finally, anxiety about the ‘Other’ becomes part of the story of rendering religion as culture, resulting in the impugning of anyone who dares to question the putative shared culture.
The book will be essential reading for students, academics and policy-makers working in the areas of sociology of religion, religious studies, socio-legal studies, law and public policy, constitutional law, religion and politics, and cultural studies.

Welfare and market: A social, economic and legal analysis

ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Die Geschichte des heiligen Paares Melania der Jüngeren und Pinian wird traditionellerweise als hagiographische Erzählung gedeutet, die das Ziel verfolge, römische aristokatische Familien zu einem asketischen Leben zu ermahnen. Ein sorgfältiger Vergleich der zwei Versionen – der griechischen und der lateinischen – der Vita Melania erlaubt es, noch eine andere Seite herauszuarbeiten: die unterschiedliche Art und Weise, einen monastischen Haushalt zu organisieren. Melania experimentierte mit verschiedenen Formen des asketischen Lebens: mit dem klösterlichen Leben in der Villa in Rom, dem traditionellen Kloster in Africa und schließlich der privaten Gründung in Palästina. Ziel dieses Aufsatzes ist es, diese Unterschiede und ihre theologischen, wirtschaftlichen und rechtlichen Implikationen zu beschreiben, um Melanias langen Weg nach Jerusalem zu verstehen.

Possessions and asceticism: Melania the Younger and her slow way to Jerusalem

The background to this article is the debate on cities as post-secular and super-diverse. The authors question that the concept of post-secular cities usefully sums up the complex processes currently characterizing religion in contemporary European cities. They propose that different historical memories are layered upon one another and they demonstrate how religious diversity and cities mutually shape one another. Based on empirical illustrations from research in Potsdam and Turin, the authors argue that cities affect religion by casting religious communities and their forms of sociality within particular spatial regimes and contributing to the territorialization of religious categories. Moreover, they state that religious groups shape cities by leaving durable architectural imprints on them. Religious super-diversity and spatial strategies in two European cities:

In an outline of influences of monastic practices on ecclesiastical institutions and also in a dynamic of institutionalization of the monastic way of life, this article deals with the different ways of handling the spiritual fatherhood through the confession and the expiation of sins and the discipline, based on the guidance of the monks and on monastic rules (IV-V centuries). In particular, the spiritual direction in the monasteries of Pachom is accomplished by the monastic rules. This analysis is fundamental because of the inheritance that Pachomian canons bequeath and it could be useful towards understanding the use of rules in other Coptic monasteries, in particular the structure of shenoutian monasticism’s discipline.
