Dynamic of a planing hull in regular waves: Comparison of experimental, numerical and mathematical methods

Numerical study on a heeled one-stepped boat moving forward in planing regime

The theoretical discoveries of the Sanal flow choking [V. R. Sanal Kumar et al., “Sanal flow choking: A paradigm shift in computational fluid dynamics code verification and diagnosing detonation and hemorrhage in real‐world fluid‐flow systems,” Global Challenges 4, 2000012 (2020)] and streamtube flow choking [V. R. Sanal Kumar et al., “Deflagration to detonation transition in chemical rockets with sudden expansion/divergence regions,” AIAA Paper No. 2020-3520, 2020] achieved significant contemplation in all branches of science and engineering for resolving various unanswered scientific questions brought onward from the beginning of this era [V. R. Sanal Kumar et al., “A closed-form analytical model for predicting 3D boundary layer displacement thickness for the validation of viscous flow solvers,” AIP Adv. 8, 025315 (2018)]. The applications of these flow choking phenomena are more significant in aerospace industries [V. R. Sanal Kumar et al., “Nanoscale flow choking and spaceflight effects on cardiovascular risk of astronauts—A new perspective,” AIAA Paper No. 2021-0357, 2021] and medical sciences [V. R. Sanal Kumar et al., “Lopsided blood-thinning drug increases the risk of internal flow choking leading to shock wave generation causing asymptomatic cardiovascular disease,” Global Challenges 2021, 2000076]. Herein, as an offshoot of the Sanal flow choking phenomena, the proof of the concept of boundary-layer-blockage (BLB) persuaded external-flow-choking (EFC) at aircraft-in-ground (AIG)-effect is presented. When the aircraft's ground clearance is relatively low, the evolving BLB factor from both planes (the bottom surface of the aircraft and the ground) creates a transient fluid-throat, leading to the Sanal flow choking and supersonic flow development in the duct flow region. In this physical situation, the pressure ratio (Ptotal/Pstatic) at the external flow choking region is exclusively a function of the specific heat ratio of the fluid. The EFC is more prone for the low wing aircraft flying in the near vicinity to the ground and/or sea with relatively high subsonic Mach number and low angle of attack. At this flying condition, the underside of the aircraft (fuselage and/or wing) and the ground creates the convergent-divergent duct flow effect leading to the EFC at the critical total-to-static pressure ratio. The accurate estimation of the BLB factor at the location of the EFC at AIG effect is presented in this manuscript as a universal yardstick for two-dimensional (2D) in silico simulation. For establishing the proof of the concept of external flow choking and supersonic flow development and shock wave generation, the 2D in silico results are presented for both stationary and moving airfoils in ground effect. In silico results show that the airfoil at stationary position exhibits relatively higher BLB factor and an immediate occurrence of the EFC than the same airfoil moving with the identical inflow Mach number and Reynolds number. We could establish herein that the moving vehicle simulation is inevitable for capturing actual flow physics and further precise examination of the BLB factor and the possibilities of the occurrence of the EFC for credible trajectory optimization of high-speed ground-effect vehicles.

The theoretical prediction of the boundary-layer-blockage and external flow choking at moving aircraft in ground effects

Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations of planing hulls are generally considered less reliable than simulations of displacement hulls. This is due to the flow complexity around planing hulls, especially in the bow region, where the sprays are formed. The recent and constant increasing of computational capabilities allows simulating planing hull features, with more accurate turbulence models and advanced meshing procedures. However, mesh-based approaches based on the finite volume methods have shown to be limited in capturing all the phenomena around a planing hull. As such, the focus of this study is on evaluating the ability of the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics mesh-less method to numerically solve the 3-D flow around a planing hull and simulate more accurately the spray structures, which is a rather challenging task to be performed with mesh-based tools. A novel application of the DualSPHysics code for simulating a planing hull resistance test has been proposed and applied to the parent hull of the Naples warped planing hull Systematic Series. The drag and the running attitudes (heave and dynamic trim angle) are computed for a wide range of Froude’s numbers and discussed concerning experimental values.

Effects of step configuration on hydrodynamic performance of one- and doubled-stepped planing flat plates: A numerical simulation:

In the current article, the hydrodynamic forces of single-stepped planing hulls were evaluated by an analytical method and compared against towing tank tests. Using the 2D + T theory, the pressure distribution over the wedge section entering the water and the normal forces acting on the 2D sections have been computed. By integrating the 2D sectional normal forces over the entire wetted length of the vessel, the lift force acting on it has been obtained. Using lift forces as well as the consequence pitch moment, the equilibrium condition for the single-stepped planing hull is found and then resistance, dynamic trim, and the wetted surface are computed. The obtained hydrodynamic results have been compared against the experimental data and it has been observed that the presented mathematical model has reasonable accuracy, in particular, up to Froude number 2.0. Furthermore, this mathematical model can be a useful and fast tool for the stepped hull designers in the early design stage in order to compare the different hull configurations. It should also be noted that the mathematical model has been developed in such a way that it has the potential to model the sweep-back step and transverse the vertical motions of single-stepped planing hulls in future studies.

A Validation of Symmetric 2D + T Model Based on Single-Stepped Planing Hull Towing Tank Tests

Flow structure is a crucial point for the conceptual design of Wing-in-Ground effect (WIG) crafts. In this study, pressure distributions around a compound wing, velocity and the turbulent intensity distribution in the wake area after trailing of the wing, have been investigated numerically. Computational simulations were completed regarding various angles of attack in-ground-effect. Two parts made up the compound wing: The first composed by one rectangular wing in the center, the second composed by a reverse taper wing, consisting of an anhedral angle at the side. A realizable k-e turbulent model exhibited the flow field in the physical domain about the wing surface. The numerical results of the compound wing were validated using the data provided by wind tunnel tests. The flow structures around the compound wing were compared with that of a rectangular wing for different conditions. It was found that the pressure distribution on the rectangular wing was weaker than at the lower surface for the compound wing. However, the suction effect on the upper surface of the rectangular wing was higher. Also, the velocity defect and the turbulence level in the wake area was greater behind the compound wing.

A numerical and analytical way for double-stepped planing hull in regular wave

In recent years, research into ships has focused on reducing emissions, consuming less energy, and being more efficient. As a result, the maritime industry has been continuing in a green and sustainable direction. Improving the fuel efficiency of ships and the decarbonization of shipping are important issues to reduce fuel consumption and emitted Greenhouse Gas (GHG) amounts. Decarbonization in the shipping industry could be achieved through technical and operational strategies such as Energy Saving Devices (ESDs) to reduce the fuel consumption of new and existing ships. According to the makers, ESDs can optimize fuel efficiency by up to 15%. This paper reviews the current literature on stern hydrodynamic ESDs, which are mainly used on typical merchant vessels, i.e., bulkers, tankers, and carriers. A comprehensive review is carried out analysing the different available solutions for stern hydrodynamic ESDs, the working principles, the methods used for the design, optimization, and evaluation of the performance improvements, and the relevant issues of these specific ESDs.
