Mercury and human genotoxicity: Critical considerations and possible molecular mechanisms
Maria Elena Crespo-Lopez,Gisele L. Macêdo,Susana Isabel Pereira,Gabriela P. F. Arrifano,D.L.W. Picanço-Diniz,José Luiz Martins do Nascimento,Anderson Manoel Herculano +6 more
TL;DR: Increased genotoxicity was demonstrated in human populations exposed to mercury through diet, occupation or by carrying dental fillings, and concentrations of methylmercury causing significant genotoxic alterations in vitro below both safety limit and concentration were associated with delayed psychomotor development with minimal signs of methylMERcury poisoning.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mercury in the Tapajós River basin, Brazilian Amazon: A review
J. J. Berzas Nevado,R.C. Rodríguez Martín-Doimeadios,F. J. Guzmán Bernardo,M. Jiménez Moreno,Anderson Manoel Herculano,J.L.M. do Nascimento,Maria Elena Crespo-Lopez +6 more
TL;DR: This paper presents a review about mercury contamination and human exposure in the Tapajós River basin (Brazil), one of the major tributaries of the Amazon impacted by traditional gold mining from the mid 1980s.
Journal ArticleDOI
Role of serotonin in zebrafish (Danio rerio) anxiety: relationship with serotonin levels and effect of buspirone, WAY 100635, SB 224289, fluoxetine and para-chlorophenylalanine (pCPA) in two behavioral models.
Caio Maximino,Bruna Puty,Rancés Benzecry,Juliana Calábria de Araújo,Monica Gomes Lima,Evander de Jesus Oliveira Batista,Karen Renata de Matos Oliveira,Maria Elena Crespo-Lopez,Anderson Manoel Herculano +8 more
TL;DR: Results underline the differential sensitivity of these tasks to assess serotonergic agents; alternatively, serotonin might regulate zebrafish behavior differently in the novel tank test and in the light/dark test.
Journal ArticleDOI
Methylmercury genotoxicity: a novel effect in human cell lines of the central nervous system.
Maria Elena Crespo-Lopez,Andréa Lima de Sá,Anderson Manoel Herculano,Rommel Rodríguez Burbano,José Luiz Martins do Nascimento +4 more
TL;DR: This work demonstrates, for the first time, MeHg ability to provoke genotoxicity in cells of brain origin with relatively low levels of exposure.
Journal ArticleDOI
Exposure to Inorganic Mercury Causes Oxidative Stress, Cell Death, and Functional Deficits in the Motor Cortex.
Francisco Bruno Teixeira,Ana C. A. de Oliveira,Luana Ketlen Reis Leão,Nathalia Carolina Fernandes Fagundes,Rafael Monteiro Fernandes,Luanna Melo Pereira Fernandes,Márcia Cristina Freitas da Silva,Lílian Lund Amado,Fernanda do Espirito Santo Sagica,Edivaldo Herculano Corrêa de Oliveira,Maria Elena Crespo-Lopez,Cristiane Socorro Ferraz Maia,Rafael Rodrigues Lima +12 more
TL;DR: Evidence is provided that exposure to inorganic mercury in low doses, even in spite of its poor ability to cross biological barriers, is still capable of inducing motor deficits, cell death by cytotoxicity and apoptosis, and oxidative stress in the motor cortex of adult rats.
