The creative mind: myths and mechanisms

To raise the question of the nature of narrative is to invite reflection on the very nature of culture and, possibly, even on the nature of humanity itself. So natural is the impulse to narrate, so inevitable is the form of narrative for any report of the way things really happened, that narrativity could appear problematical only in a culture in which it was absent-absent or, as in some domains of contemporary Western intellectual and artistic culture, programmatically refused. Par Marie-Laure Ryan En tant que l’auteur d’un livre et de plusieurs articles dans lesquels je mise sur le concept de monde possible pour définir la fiction j’ai été vivement intéressée par la critique du concept et par l’alternative que vous proposez : la fiction comme expérimentation des possibles. Je suis entièrement d’accord avec cette dernière caractérisation, mais elle ne me semble pas exclure une définition de la fiction fondée sur les mondes possibles. Il y a en effet toute une gamme d’ « expérimentation des possibles » : par exemple les scenarios imaginaires employés par les philosophes (« admettons que Socrate » etc) ; les simples prédictions (« il est possible qu’il pleuve demain, le 25 mars 2001 »), et la fiction, par exemple un roman d’anticipation écrit en 1950 qui commence : « Winston Smith se réveilla le 25 mars 2001. Il pleuvait à verse. »). La différence entre la fiction et les autres exemples d’expérimentation des possibles est que dans la fiction le possible est décrit comme réel, et que la contemplation de ce possible est une activité qui porte en soit sa propre justification, alors que dans les deux autres cas le possible n’est envisagé que dans la mesure où il pourrait devenir réel (« il pleuvra demain »), ou pour sa valeur heuristique par rapport à la réalité. Votre théorie de la fiction me semble miser excessivement sur la valeur didactique de la fiction par rapport à la réalité. Je suis tout à fait d’accord que les chefs-d’œuvre de la littérature peu

L'autofiction : discours d'un moi possible ou d'un moi contrefactuel ? par Marie-Laure Ryan Comme c'est le cas pour la transfiction, l'autofiction me semble couvrir des cas extrêmement différents, ce qui explique peut-être la réticence des poéticiens a la reconnaitre comme un genre autonome. Il y d'une part les textes qui créent une contre-partie (à la Lewis) du narrateur dans un monde alternatif : le Marcel de La Recherche, le Borges de l'Aleph ou de Funès le mémorieux. Cette contrepartie diffère du narrateur réel par des propriétés concrètes : par exemple des contacts avec des personnages imaginaires. D'autre part, comme Mounir Laouayen le remarque for pertinemment, il y a des textes que l'auteur titre autofiction a fins de protection-soit pour éviter l'accusation d'indiscrétion par rapport à autrui, soit pour excuser les failles de la mémoire. Puis il y a les auteurs qui font de l'autofiction un jeu de cache-cache, qui affichent l'étiquette par coquetterie postmoderne, ou qui désirent exprimer leur solidarité avec la conception Lacanienne du sujet. Certains auteurs — comme me semble-t-il Roland Barthes dans RB par lui-même — cherchent en outre à bénéficier de l'intérêt suscite par « le vrai » sans toutefois accepter la responsabilité morale de la confession ni vouloir s'offrir intégralement au regard du lecteur (une coquetterie anti-Rousseauiste). Le titre d'autofiction donne aussi un prestige littéraire au texte que la pure autobiographie ne présente pas nécessairement :
