Factors controlling the lower limits of fucoid algae on the shore

TL;DR: Field and culture studies on fucoid alga of the upper shore showed that their lower limits of distribution were determined largely by interspecific competition, with the possibility that differences in life history and palatibility to grazing molluscs contribute to the disparate competitive abilities of Pelvetia and Ascophyllum.
Journal ArticleDOI

The effects of brief periodic submergence on intertidal fucoid algae

TL;DR: Winter collected plants of the high shore dwellers Pelvetia canaliculata and Fucus spiralis responded similarly especially in nutrient-poor media, but plants collected in summer grew almost as well if submerged for only one hour out of every 12 as they did when submerged for 11 h.
