Journal ArticleDOI

Discriminant validity of a reduced set of Mini-Mental State Examination items for dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

TL;DR: A 9‐item discriminant function including the variables for time orientation, recall, calculation, copying a figure, age, writing, 3‐step command, naming, and race distinguished demented subjects from community controls with 91% sensitivity and 88% specificity.
Journal ArticleDOI

Twin studies of Alzheimer's disease: an approach to etiology and prevention.

TL;DR: It is concluded that the time is ripe for twin studies of AD, and that such work holds considerable potential for the investigation of etiology and, possibly, for the identification of strategies for prevention.
Journal ArticleDOI

β-Amyloid gene is not present in three copies in autopsy-validated Alzheimer's disease

TL;DR: It is suggested that Alzheimer's disease is associated with a duplication of the amyloid precursor protein gene localized to chromosome 21q21, and DNA polymorphisms adjacent to this sequence were used to determine the number of copies of the beta-amyloid gene in DNA isolated from human blood and brain.
Journal ArticleDOI

AIDS and multiple sclerosis: neural and mental features.

TL;DR: MS patients showed more evidence of cognitive impairment than equally disabled AIDS patients, and the groups significantly differed in mental symptoms and mental disorders seen currently and after the diagnosis of MS or human immunodeficiency virus‐I infection.
