The loop-gap resonator: a new microwave lumped circuit ESR sample structure

We have fabricated active probes for on-wafer waveform and network measurements. The probes incorporate GaAs nonlinear transmission line (NLTL) based network analyzer (NWA) integrated circuits and low-loss quartz coplanar-waveguide probe tips. The active probes show step response falltimes of 2.7 ps when excited by a 0.7-ps falltime input, Using these active probes, we demonstrate both waveform measurements with 2.7-ps risetime and network measurements to 200 GHz. We discuss the probe tip and NWA IC design, the hybrid assembly and mechanical design, and system design considerations. On-wafer waveform and S-parameter measurements of monolithic millimeter-wave integrated circuits are demonstrated. >

Millimeter-wave on-wafer waveform and network measurements using active probes

The definition of effective material parameters (permittivity and permeability) for composite layers containing only one-two parallel arrays of complex-shaped inclusions is discussed. Such structures are of high importance for the design of novel metamaterials, where the realizable layers quite often have only one or two layers of particles across the sample thickness. Effective parameters which describe the averaged induced polarizations are introduced. As an explicit example, we develop an analytical model suitable for calculation of the effective material parameters eeff and μeff for double arrays of electrically small, electrically polarizable scatterers. Electric and magnetic dipole moments induced in the structure and the corresponding reflection and transmission coefficients are calculated using the local field approach for the normal plane-wave incidence, and effective parameters are introduced through the averaged fields and polarizations. On the definition of effective permittivity and permeability for thin composite layers

In the present communication the (quasi-) static self-inductance of a thin-film spiral coil is investigated; calculations are performed through application of basic field principles.

On the inductance of printed spiral coils

A new class of electrically small microwave resonators working in lumped mode is described for filter and oscillator applications. These resonators are tunable over a wide range and have a Q of about 2000. Tuning, coupling, and applications of these resonant structures are discussed.
