A forward-facing vision system for a vehicle includes a forward-facing camera disposed in a windshield electronics module attached at a windshield of the vehicle and viewing through the windshield. A control includes a processor that, responsive to processing of captured image data, detects taillights of leading vehicles during nighttime conditions and, responsive to processing of captured image data, detects lane markers on a road being traveled by the vehicle. The control, responsive to lane marker detection and a determination that the vehicle is drifting out of a traffic lane, may control a steering system of the vehicle to mitigate such drifting, with the steering system manually controllable by a driver of the vehicle irrespective of control by the control. The processor, based at least in part on detection of lane markers via processing of captured image data, determines curvature of the road being traveled by the vehicle.

The adaptive speed control system may reduce the speed of the equipped vehicle responsive at least in part to a detection of a curve in the road ahead of the equipped vehicle via processing by the image processor of image data captured by the imaging device.

An automated system and method for remote workstation inventorying and monitoring within a distributed computing environment are presented. The computing environment includes a plurality of workstations interconnected by a network. Each workstation has basic peer-to-peer communication ability providing remote file transfer and remote command execution. A designated non-server workstation operates as a monitor for generating an execute command to be sent to each remote workstation to undergo monitoring. At the remote workstation a diagnostic routine is executed for monitoring at least one configuration characteristic of the remote workstation and for providing based thereon a report file. The report file is then returned to the monitor workstation for analysis, including compiling of an appropriate report and possible issuance of an alert message.

The Controller Area Network (CAN) is a serial bus communications protocol developed by Bosch in the early 1980s. It defines a standard for efficient and reliable communication between sensor, actuator, controller, and other nodes in real-time applications. CAN is the de facto standard in a large variety of networked embedded control systems. The early CAN development was mainly supported by the vehicle industry: CAN is found in a variety of passenger cars, trucks, boats, spacecraft, and other types of vehicles. The protocol is also widely used today in industrial automation and other areas of networked embedded control, with applications in diverse products such as production machinery, medical equipment, building automation, weaving machines, and wheelchairs.The purpose of this chapter is to give an introduction to CAN and some of its vehicle applications. The outline is as follows. Section 2 describes the CAN protocol, including its message formats and error handling. The section is concluded by a brief history of CAN. Examples of vehicle application architectures based on CAN are given in Section 3. A few specific control loops closed over CAN buses are discussed in Section 4. The paper is concluded with some perspectives in Section 5, where current research issues such as x-by-wire and standardized software architectures are considered. The examples are described in more detail in [14]. A detailed description of CAN is given in the textbook [6]. Another good resource for further information is the homepage of the organization CAN-in-Automation (CiA) [3]. The use of CAN as a basis for distributed control systems is discussed in [13].

A process for the localization of defective stations in local networks which consist of several locally distributedly operating stations is proposed, particularly for use in automobiles. The process is characterized by station-internal, statistical evaluation of external and/or internal error signals. The redundancy necessary for a self-monitoring of the stations interconnected by a serial bus need not be available locally in the respective station, rather only the redundancy existing in any case in a network due to the presence of protocol-compatible stations is utilized.
