Content delivery and caching from a network provider's perspective

This paper aims to review the status of standardization activities on the black link (BL) and corresponding alien wavelength concepts. It discusses experimental work on filterless optical networks conducted within a dedicated Deutsche Telekom project. The general prospects and existing challenges concerning elastic extensions of the BL are also assessed. Furthermore, we present relevant work on control and management plane interoperability comprising generalized multi-protocol label switching and transport software defined networking aspects. In the second part of the article, we report on the latest dual-vendor experiments on data plane interoperability in terms of digital signal processing technology for next generation 1.28 Tb/s PM-16QAM super-channels. Finally, we present a network reachability analysis based on the widely used Gaussian noise model in the context of data plane interoperability. This analysis estimates the network-wide impact of the single-vendor versus the dual-vendor approach.

Vendor-interoperable elastic optical interfaces: Standards, experiments, and challenges [Invited]

A number of today’s over-the-top (OTT) services could greatly benefit from a flexible, efficient, and scalable network-layer multicast support on the Internet. IP multicast showed not to meet these requirements, hindering its adoption in more than individual network islands. As a consequence, content delivery networks (CDNs) emerged as alternative and implemented one-to-many multicasting at the application layer. Yet, due to practical reasons and conflicting stakeholder interests, CDN deployments usually end at the border of Internet service provider networks, making one-to-many deliveries at an Internet-scale challenging up to date. In a previous work, the authors presented software-defined multicast (Sdm) to mitigate this problem by unlocking network-layer multicast support for OTT services inside ISP networks. In this paper, DynSdm is proposed to complement Sdm in key aspects, allowing for a more holistic support of relevant scenarios aspects, and enabling a fine-granular traffic engineering of multicast traffic inside ISP networks. For this, DynSdm presents a detailed design of the ISP-internal traffic and service management process and introduces a set of novel SDN-based network-layer mechanisms for traffic load balancing as well as handling of group and network dynamics. DynSdm was implemented as prototype and extensively evaluated, showing its flexibility, high traffic efficiency, good scalability, and superior ability to balance traffic load inside ISP networks.

Flexible, Efficient, and Scalable Software-Defined Over-the-Top Multicast for ISP Environments With DynSdm

Future Internet, inherent traffic and network management as well as the corresponding business aspects are topics of intensive research activity. The combination of those areas is a main focus of Inherent Network Management (INM) as a management framework based on distributed, self-organizing and autonomous approaches to address new challenges in a trend towards heterogeneous and dynamic future networking environments. We describe the INM design and behaviors especially with regard to advanced monitoring and fast failure response to enable more flexibility in traffic engineering, in order to improve the control and utilization of bandwidth and other network resources. We analyze a case study on the process of upgrading the links in broadband access networks, as a steadily ongoing planning procedure in operational fixed and mobile networks to keep pace with rapidly growing user demand and Internet traffic. Full mesh topologies are considered as a relevant core network structure that allows for an explicit analytical comparison of the resource and cost efficiency with and without optimized load balancing. The results indicate that flexible path design with INM support can increase the admissible throughput or, vice versa, reduce part of the over-provisioning of routing and transmission capacity with corresponding savings in capital expenditure as well as for operational expenditure due to reduced energy consumption.

Traffic engineering supported by inherent network management: analysis of resource efficiency and cost saving potential

Traffic engineering is an important concept that allows Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to utilize their existing routing hardware more efficiently. One technology that can be used is Segment Routing (SR). In this paper, we address the use of SR to increase the resilience against failure scenarios. In addition, we develop solutions that are manageable and, thus, deployable in a tier 1 ISP network. We propose a post-convergence aware SR based optimization model. With it, we can proactively find a single SR configuration that is beneficial in all predefined failure scenarios, including single link failures, shared risk link group failures, and node failures. In addition to this use-case, we also extend the optimization model to include other important practical requirements such as keeping the number of SR tunnels to a minimum, avoiding arbitrary traffic splitting, or meeting latency bounds. We evaluate our approaches with recently measured data from a tier 1 ISP and show that we can improve over state of the art routing approaches.

Failure Resiliency With Only a Few Tunnels – Enabling Segment Routing for Traffic Engineering

IP networks have established as a global telecommunication platform with increasing user population and an extending spectrum of services. The traffic is also steadily increasing, recently driven by peer to peer networking in addition to client server based applications. Network planers and operators have to ensure the scalability of IP platforms in a permanent upgrade process for transmission capacities. At present, Deutsche Telekom and other telecommunication network providers are introducing traffic engineering methods to achieve an optimum resource utilization.

In a first step, traffic engineering can be applied to a predefined network topology, but a comprehensive approach has to be coordinated with a process for upgrading the link capacities and has to prepare for relevant failure scenarios. We have evaluated the efficiency of traffic engineering together with simple link upgrade strategies in order to get a maximum throughput. Therefore a predefined traffic matrix T is taken into account. The optimization goal is to scale the traffic matrix by a maximum factor ? max such that the traffic demand ? max T can still be carried on the available network resources. The influence of the network topology on the evaluation results is shown in examples with regard to single link failures.
