TL;DR: In this article, one or more sensors and/or sensing techniques are used individually or in combination to detect and or measure heart rate and or heart rate variability, and the sensors may be wearable or portable and operate on different principles and may include different power profiles.
Abstract: One or more sensors and/or sensing techniques are used individually or in combination to detect and/or measure heart rate and/or heart rate variability. The sensors may be wearable and/or portable and may operate on different principles and may include different power profiles. The sensors and/or sensing techniques may be used at the same time or at different times that may overlap partially or completely, or may be mutually exclusive. A controller may select one or more sensors and/or sensing techniques based on operating conditions and/or based on conservation of power.

TL;DR: In this paper, a head has an abrasive portion for contacting the surface and a conducting portion inside the head for sensing layer removal from a surface, which simplifies the design of the sensor head and means it can have a design which is easy to clean with no parts which are easily damaged.
Abstract: A sensor is provided for sensing layer removal from a surface. A head has an abrasive portion for contacting the surface and a conducting portion inside the head. This device has a sensor design which provides self-generation of a sensor signal with no power supply to the device head. This simplifies the design of the sensor head, and means it can have a design which is easy to clean with no parts which are easily damaged. In one set of examples, the device is a skin treatment device.
