Journal ArticleDOI
Heat stress, dehydration, and kidney function in sugarcane cutters in El Salvador--A cross-shift study of workers at risk of Mesoamerican nephropathy.
Ramón García-Trabanino,Emmanuel Jarquín,Catharina Wesseling,Richard J. Johnson,Marvin Gonzalez-Quiroz,Marvin Gonzalez-Quiroz,Ilana Weiss,Jason Glaser,Juan José Vindell,Leo Stockfelt,Carlos Roncal,Tamara Harra,Lars Barregard +12 more
TL;DR: The high prevalence of reduced eGFR, and the cross-shift changes are consistent with recurrent dehydration from strenuous work in a hot and humid environment as an important causal factor.
Journal ArticleDOI
What do epidemiological studies tell us about chronic kidney disease of undetermined cause in Meso-America? A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Marvin Gonzalez-Quiroz,Marvin Gonzalez-Quiroz,Marvin Gonzalez-Quiroz,Neil Pearce,Ben Caplin,Dorothea Nitsch +5 more
TL;DR: The authors' meta-analysis showed positive associations for males (versus females) and family history of CKD, water intake, lowland altitude and CKDu, and no significant associations with pesticide exposure, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs intake, heat stress and alcohol consumption.
Journal ArticleDOI
Renal Morphology, Clinical Findings, and Progression Rate in Mesoamerican Nephropathy.
Julia Wijkström,Marvin Gonzalez-Quiroz,Mario Hernandez,Zulma Trujillo,Kjell Hultenby,Anneli Ring,Magnus Söderberg,Aurora Aragón,Carl-Gustaf Elinder,Annika Wernerson,Annika Wernerson +10 more
TL;DR: This study confirms the renal morphology of MeN: chronicglomerular and tubulointerstitial damage with glomerulosclerosis and chronic glomerular ischemia and follow-up data show that eGFRs, on average, deteriorated.
Journal ArticleDOI
Decline in Kidney Function among Apparently Healthy Young Adults at Risk of Mesoamerican Nephropathy
Marvin Gonzalez-Quiroz,Marvin Gonzalez-Quiroz,Evangelia-Theano Smpokou,Richard J. Silverwood,Armando Camacho,Dorien Faber,Brenda La Rosa Garcia,Amin Oomatia,Michael Hill,Jason Glaser,Jennifer S. Le Blond,Catharina Wesseling,Aurora Aragón,Liam Smeeth,Neil Pearce,Dorothea Nitsch,Ben Caplin +16 more
TL;DR: Among men, outdoor and agricultural work and lack of shade availability during work breaks, reported at baseline, were associated with rapid decline, and other factors may also contribute to this disease.
Journal ArticleDOI
Prevalence and Risk Factors for CKD Among Brickmaking Workers in La Paz Centro, Nicaragua
Lyanne Gallo-Ruiz,Caryn Sennett,Mauricio Sanchez-Delgado,Ana García-Urbina,Tania Gámez-Altamirano,Komal Basra,Rebecca L. Laws,Juan José Amador,Damaris López-Pilarte,Yorghos Tripodis,Daniel R. Brooks,Michael D. McClean,Joseph Kupferman,David J. Friedman,Aurora Aragón,Marvin Gonzalez-Quiroz,Marvin Gonzalez-Quiroz,Marvin Gonzalez-Quiroz,Madeleine K. Scammell +18 more
TL;DR: The prevalence of CKD is high in this population of brick workers in La Paz Centro, Nicaragua, suggesting that the epidemic of CKd affecting Mesoamerica is not limited to agricultural workers and is consistent with the hypothesis that occupational heat exposure is a risk factor for kidney disease in this region.
