Digital healthcare technology adoption by elderly people: A capability approach model

The application of expert systems has increased drastically in the last decade. The power of these systems derives from the knowledge they possess, rather than from the inference mechanism that they employ. To ensure the performance of an expert system, the acquisition of knowledge becomes a vital task in the development process. This article discusses issues related to people involved in the knowledge acquisition task, reviews techniques to acquire knowledge, and presents a methodology that offers a structured approach to knowledge acquisition. Trends in knowledge acquisition are discussed.

Knowledge acquisition: issues, techniques and methodology

The authors examine whether one technique for group knowledge elicitation, focus groups, can provide different thoughts and judgments about a problem than individual interviews. The experimental situation was based on the resolution of an ill-structured problem by experienced subjects in a field setting. Videotaped scenarios were used to describe the situation for knowledge acquisition. Ten subjects were used, five for individual interviews and five for the focus groups. It was found that focus groups performed better in generating original responses than individual interviews and that focus groups were at least as good as individual interviews in terms of the quality and acceptability of ideas. >

Focus groups as a knowledge elicitation technique: an exploratory study

The already difficult knowledge acquisition process is complicated when the expert system being developed requires interaction with multiple experts. In this tutorial for novice knowledge engineers and managers we discuss some considerations involved in using multiple experts, including (1) deciding when multiple experts may be necessary, (2) eliciting knowledge from multiple experts individually or in small groups, and (3) knowledge engineer capabilities and preparation. Next, we present three specific group-appropriate techniques to elicit knowledge during a knowledge acquisition session: brainstorming, consensus decision making, and the nominal group technique. Finally, we consider the importance and objectives of debriefing following knowledge acquisition from multiple experts
