The production of clean and renewable hydrogen through water splitting using photocatalysts has received much attention due to the increasing global energy crises. In this study, a high efficiency of the photocatalytic H2 production was achieved using graphene nanosheets decorated with CdS clusters as visible-light-driven photocatalysts. The materials were prepared by a solvothermal method in which graphene oxide (GO) served as the support and cadmium acetate (Cd(Ac)2) as the CdS precursor. These nanosized composites reach a high H2-production rate of 1.12 mmol h–1 (about 4.87 times higher than that of pure CdS nanoparticles) at graphene content of 1.0 wt % and Pt 0.5 wt % under visible-light irradiation and an apparent quantum efficiency (QE) of 22.5% at wavelength of 420 nm. Highly efficient visible-light-driven photocatalytic hydrogen production of CdS-cluster-decorated graphene nanosheets.

Phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes (pc-WLEDs) are emerging as an indispensable solid-state light source for the next generation lighting industry and display systems due to their unique properties including but not limited to energy savings, environment-friendliness, small volume, and long persistence. Until now, major challenges in pc-WLEDs have been to achieve high luminous efficacy, high chromatic stability, brilliant color-rending properties, and price competitiveness against fluorescent lamps, which rely critically on the phosphor properties. A comprehensive understanding of the nature and limitations of phosphors and the factors dominating the general trends in pc-WLEDs is of fundamental importance for advancing technological applications. This report aims to provide the most recent advances in the synthesis and application of phosphors for pc-WLEDs with emphasis specifically on: (a) principles to tune the excitation and emission spectra of phosphors: prediction according to crystal field theory, and structural chemistry characteristics (e.g. covalence of chemical bonds, electronegativity, and polarization effects of element); (b) pc-WLEDs with phosphors excited by blue-LED chips: phosphor characteristics, structure, and activated ions (i.e. Ce 3+ and Eu 2+ ), including YAG:Ce, other garnets, non-garnets, sulfides, and (oxy)nitrides; (c) pc-WLEDs with phosphors excited by near ultraviolet LED chips: single-phased white-emitting phosphors (e.g. Eu 2+ –Mn 2+ activated phosphors), red-green-blue phosphors, energy transfer, and mechanisms involved; and (d) new clues for designing novel high-performance phosphors for pc-WLEDs based on available LED chips. Emphasis shall also be placed on the relationships among crystal structure, luminescence properties, and device performances. In addition, applications, challenges and future advances of pc-WLEDs will be discussed.

State of the art of zirconia for dental applications

PURPOSE: To enlarge aspect ratio, flexural strength and tensile strength, by calcining a mixture of a titanium source compound, an oxygen-containing alkali metallic compound and aluminum oxide in a given ratio at a fixed temperature and calcining again at a fixed temperature. CONSTITUTION: A titanium source compound is blended with an oxygen- containing alkali metallic compound and aluminum oxide. Then the mixture has a molar ratio of TiO 2 /M 2 O (M: alkali metal) of 0.4W1.5. The amount of aluminum oxide added is 1.25×10 -2 W2.5×10 -3 based on 1mol titanium source compound (TiO 2 ). The mixture is calcined at 600W1,100°C to give an amorphous material, which is further press molded and calcined again at 900W1,350°C. COPYRIGHT: (C)1988,JPO&Japio

Production of polycrystal consisting of fibrous alkali metal titanate

The react diffusion under pressures of 0–3 GPa has been investigated in the Al-Ag system at temperatures of 729–873 K. The only phase appearing in the diffusion zone under pressures of 0–3 GPa is ς phase. The rate constants of phase growth and the interdiffusion coefficients decrease with increasing pressure. The activation volumes of interdiffusion and phase growth of ς phase are determined to be 7.9 × 10−6 and 7.0 × 10−6 m3 mol−1 respectively. These values of activation volume indicate that phase growth is controlled by diffusion occurring by the monovacancy mechanism.

Effect of High Pressure on the Solubility of Silver in Aluminium

Recent syudies on the thermal stability of zirconia ceramics were summarized. Although yttriadoped tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (TZP) show excellent mechanical properties, the fracture strength was greatly degraded by annealing at low temperature such as 200°C in air. This is due to the formation of microcracks accompanied with the tetragonal to monoclinic phase transformation. The phase transformation was induced by the chemical reaction between ZrO2 and H2O adsorbed on the surface. The thermal stability of TZP could be improved by decreasing the grain size of zirconia, dispersing Al2O3 and alloying with CeO2.
