In this paper, the iterative learning control (ILC) literature published between 1998 and 2004 is categorized and discussed, extending the earlier reviews presented by two of the authors. The papers includes a general introduction to ILC and a technical description of the methodology. The selected results are reviewed, and the ILC literature is categorized into subcategories within the broader division of application-focused and theory-focused results.

A review of space robotics technologies for on-orbit servicing

Dynamic analysis of flexible manipulators, a literature review

Like the human limbs which inspired them most robots are discrete mechanisms with rigid links connected by single degree of freedom joints. In contrast, 'continuum' and 'serpentine' robot mechanisms move by bending through a series of continuous arcs producing motion which resembles that of biological tentacles or snakes. This paper provides a single reference to the expanding technology of continuum robot mechanisms. It defines the fundamental difference between discrete, serpentine and continuum robot devices, presents the 'state of the art' of continuum robots, outlines their areas of application, and introduces some control issues. Finally, some conclusions regarding the continued development of these devices are made.

Short survey: Dual arm manipulation-A survey

This paper addresses an engineering attempt of utilizing multiple robot arms in the assembly of deformable parts. The robot system developed in this research simulates a practically existing assembly process in an automobile plant where wrapped cables (wire harness) have to be fixed on the body of a car. This operation is performed by skilled workers and is considered to be difficult for automation. In this paper, a synthetic robotized solution is proposed for this process. For the first time, it realizes robotized assembly of a complex deformable object (wire harness) under a condition similar to an actual plant. Although some of the problems are simplified in the implementation, those critical to assemblies involving deformable objects are investigated and solved with experimental validation. Therefore, this research is expected to contribute to exploring the feasibility and potential of robotized assembly using deformable parts in actual plants.

Robotized Assembly of a Wire Harness in a Car Production Line

This paper presents development of a quad rotor tail-sitter VTOL UAV (Vertical Takeoff and Landing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) which is composed of four rotors and a fixed wing. The conventional VTOL UAVs have a drawback in the accuracy of the attitude control in stationary hovering because they were developed based on a fixed-wing aircraft and they used the control surfaces, such as aileron, elevator, and rudder for the attitude control. To overcome such a drawback, we developed a quad rotor tail-sitter VTOL UAV. The quad rotor tail-sitter VTOL UAV realizes high accuracy in the attitude control with four rotors like a quad rotor helicopter and achieves level flight like a fixed-wing airplane. The remarkable characteristic of the developed quad rotor tail-sitter VTOL UAV is that it does not use any control surfaces even in the level flight. This paper shows the design concept of the developed UAV and experimental verification of all flight modes including hovering, transition flight and level flight.

In this paper we propose a new method to detumble a malfunctioning satellite. Large space debris such as malfunctioning satellites generally rotates with nutational motion. Thus several researches have proposed the methods to use a space robot for capturing and deorbiting these debris. The most of the past studies considered the method to detumble an uncontrollable satellite and then capture a single spinning satellite. However these methods require physical contact with malfunctioning satellites, which has a risk of accident. Therefore, we propose a method with an eddy current brake. The eddy current brake system can produce braking force to the target without any physical contact. Thus, we can reduce the risk of critical collision between the space robot and the target object. This paper firstly reviews dynamics of a tumbling satellite and proposes a detumbling strategy with the eddy current brake. We carry out a fundamental experiment to evaluate the performance of the braking force of the developed eddy current brake system, and then we simulate detumbling operation by using the experimental data and show an effectiveness of the proposed detumbling method.

Detumbling an uncontrolled satellite with contactless force by using an eddy current brake

This paper deals with the design and dynamic control simulation of a new type and dynamic control simulation of a new type of 4-DOFs parallel mechanism providing 3 translations and 1 rotation for high-speed handling and machining. This parallel mechanism is named as H4. A model-based dynamic control scheme is developed to improve the accuracy of the trajectory tracking. A simplified dynamic model is used for the H4 robot to decrease the cost of computation. A dynamic simulation is performed using ADAMS/sup TM/. In addition, the adept motion is used as a benchmark test to evaluate the effect of the dynamic control. The simulation results show that the dynamic control dramatically improves the trajectory tracking accuracy.
