The Internet of Things: A survey

In recent year, the Internet of Things (IoT) has drawn significant research attention. IoT is considered as a part of the Internet of the future and will comprise billions of intelligent communicating `things'. The future of the Internet will consist of heterogeneously connected devices that will further extend the borders of the world with physical entities and virtual components. The Internet of Things (IoT) will empower the connected things with new capabilities. In this survey, the definitions, architecture, fundamental technologies, and applications of IoT are systematically reviewed. Firstly, various definitions of IoT are introduced; secondly, emerging techniques for the implementation of IoT are discussed; thirdly, some open issues related to the IoT applications are explored; finally, the major challenges which need addressing by the research community and corresponding potential solutions are investigated.

The internet of things: a survey

The Semantic Web should enable greater access not only to content but also to services on the Web. Users and software agents should be able to discover, invoke, compose, and monitor Web resources offering particular services and having particular properties. As part of the DARPA Agent Markup Language program, we have begun to develop an ontology of services, called DAML-S, that will make these functionalities possible. In this paper we describe the overall structure of the ontology, the service profile for advertising services, and the process model for the detailed description of the operation of services. We also compare DAML-S with several industry efforts to define standards for characterizing services on the Web.

DAML-S: semantic markup for web services

The paradigmatic shift from a Web of manual interactions to a Web of programmatic interactions driven by Web services is creating unprecedented opportunities for the formation of online business-to-business (B2B) collaborations. In particular, the creation of value-added services by composition of existing ones is gaining a significant momentum. Since many available Web services provide overlapping or identical functionality, albeit with different quality of service (QoS), a choice needs to be made to determine which services are to participate in a given composite service. This paper presents a middleware platform which addresses the issue of selecting Web services for the purpose of their composition in a way that maximizes user satisfaction expressed as utility functions over QoS attributes, while satisfying the constraints set by the user and by the structure of the composite service. Two selection approaches are described and compared: one based on local (task-level) selection of services and the other based on global allocation of tasks to services using integer programming.

QoS-aware middleware for Web services composition

Ontologies tend to be found everywhere. They are viewed as the silver bullet for many applications, such as database integration, peer-to-peer systems, e-commerce, semantic web services, or social networks. However, in open or evolving systems, such as the semantic web, different parties would, in general, adopt different ontologies. Thus, merely using ontologies, like using XML, does not reduce heterogeneity: it just raises heterogeneity problems to a higher level. Euzenat and Shvaikos book is devoted to ontology matching as a solution to the semantic heterogeneity problem faced by computer systems. Ontology matching aims at finding correspondences between semantically related entities of different ontologies. These correspondences may stand for equivalence as well as other relations, such as consequence, subsumption, or disjointness, between ontology entities. Many different matching solutions have been proposed so far from various viewpoints, e.g., databases, information systems, and artificial intelligence. The second edition of Ontology Matching has been thoroughly revised and updated to reflect the most recent advances in this quickly developing area, which resulted in more than 150 pages of new content. In particular, the book includes a new chapter dedicated to the methodology for performing ontology matching. It also covers emerging topics, such as data interlinking, ontology partitioning and pruning, context-based matching, matcher tuning, alignment debugging, and user involvement in matching, to mention a few. More than 100 state-of-the-art matching systems and frameworks were reviewed. With Ontology Matching, researchers and practitioners will find a reference book that presents currently available work in a uniform framework. In particular, the work and the techniques presented in this book can be equally applied to database schema matching, catalog integration, XML schema matching and other related problems. The objectives of the book include presenting (i) the state of the art and (ii) the latest research results in ontology matching by providing a systematic and detailed account of matching techniques and matching systems from theoretical, practical and application perspectives.

Ontology Matching

The task of WP6 is to evaluate the CONNECT technologies under realistic situations. To achieve this goal, WP6 concentrated its effort in the development of a main scenario in the context of the GMES, which required the connection of two very different and independently build systems provided by the industry partners. The first one is a video-surveillance system provided by Thales; the second one, is an implementation of the GSMA Rich Communication Suite provided by DOCOMO. The resulting scenario allows to verify the validity of some of the CONNECT claims and to investigate with the introduction of some of the CONNECT technologies in the context of the integration of real systems. In addition, WP6 started the work of evaluating how the overall CONNECT work cycle can be introduced in the context of industrial prototype development.

Experiment scenarios, prototypes and report - Iteration 1

The last few years have seen two parallel trends emerge. The first of such trends is set by technologies such as Near Field Communication, 2D Bar codes, RFID and others that support the association of digital information with virtually every object. Using these technologies ordinary objects such as coffee mugs or advertisement posters can provide information that is easily processed. The second trend is set by (semantic) Web services that provide a way to automatically invoke functionalities across the Internet lowering interoperability barriers. The PERCI system, discussed in the chapter, provides a way to bridge between these two technologies allowing the invocation of Web services using the information gathered from the tags effectively transforming every object in a service proxy. SOLUTION: As for a certain data object using a computer, a method of detecting a service which can use the data object as an input, includes a step which offers taxonomy about a type, a step 300 which receives a data object which has a type belonging to the taxonomy, a step 350 which obtains the data type of the data object the data type of one or more attributes and accumulates them in a list of types related with the data object, and a step which obtains the service which can use the types with respect to all types included in the list of associated types and obtains a list of services which can use the inputted data. Method and equipment which find out service

In this paper I present a principle-based parser based on Pritchett's theory of human sentence processing. The parser proceeds bottom-up and at each step it attempts to maximally satisfy the principles of the grammar; specifically, the parser satisfies the maximal number of theta and case requirements. This strategy does not guarantee that the best local choice will be the best choice globally; therefore the parser is obliged to backtrack. The reanalysis process is constrained by the On-Line Locality Principle, which is responsible for the selection of the solution in points of ambiguity. As a consequence the On-Line Locality Principle is responsible for failures of the revision process in the sense that the revision process may fail to recognize the grammatical structure of some sentences because of this constraint. The theory underlying the implementation guarantees that the revision process fails with all and only garden path sentences. When the failure of the revision process is caused by the On-Line Locality Principle the parser attempts to build a different structure that violates the On-Line Locality Principle, but nevertheless satisfies the grammar. If such a structure is found, then the sentence is potentially a garden path and an appropriate message is given. With an extension of the revision process to NP-traces, some island violations can be seen as a side effect of the parsing process. Following this idea, island violations are a special kind of garden path involving traces instead of open NPs.
