The standard hospital room interface for control of communication and entertainment devices assumes a patient has the ability to hold and press mechanical switches. If the patient does not have these abilities, then the patient must wait for a nurse to walk by the room to ask for help. Mobile devices using the Android and iOS operating systems are compared to accommodate the limitations of a patient for communication and control of the hospital room environment. In order to design an appropriate system, analysis of currently available off-the-shelf technology is performed to find the appropriate configuration that is compatible with the hospital room environment and covers a clear patient need. Evaluation of components for a fully integrated system is shown. Strengths and weaknesses of each technology are discussed. Progress toward an integrated solution on a tablet is provided in the conclusion.

Evaluation of Smart Phones for Remote Control of a Standard Hospital Room

The protection for individual privacy especially in personal computers has drawn sharply increasing attentions all over the world. Owing to the concept of machine-to-machine (M2M) communication that plays a significant role in the Internet of things (IoT), Sit&Stand, an android application is ergonomically developed to help people with smartphones prevent privacy disclosure through locking or unlocking their computers intelligently and automatically according to their body postures such as stand-up or sit-down. This paper first introduces the M2M communication, and describes system model and the principle to recognize body postures intelligently. And then, the application implementation is stated in detail. Finally a few tests are made to verify the availability of the application and further enhance its performance.

Apparatus for extending control and methods thereof

Design improvements to a remotely controlled system for patients with limited mobility are described. This system provides communication and control of the room environment with mouse control that can be adapted to the functional need of the user. Analysis is provided on the selection and integration of components within the system as well as an overview of the simulated access times for several key components. Transition to an open source Android operating system is discussed for long-term use in the home environment. Prototype configurations for use in the hospital and home environment are introduced.

Remotely controlled communication and control system for limited mobility individuals

The Perspectives program is a unique collaborative social communication intervention for adolescents with Asperger's syndrome and similar learning profiles. Clinicians use radio interviews as the vehicle to explicitly teach the process of social communication. Social skill objectives are addressed through this process approach, which was adapted from the framework of Social Thinking (Winner, 2002)
