Linking continental-slope failures and climate change: Testing the clathrate gun hypothesis
TL;DR: For example, the authors found that more than 70% by volume of continental slope failures during the past 45 k.y. was displaced in two periods, between 15 and 13 ka and between 11 and 8 ka, and these intervals correlate with rising sea level and peaks in the methane record during Bolling-Allerod and Preboreal periods.
Journal ArticleDOI
Gas hydrates: past and future geohazard?
Mark A. Maslin,Matthew Owen,Richard Betts,Simon Day,Tom Dunkley Jones,Tom Dunkley Jones,Andy Ridgwell +6 more
TL;DR: The destabilization of gas hydrate reserves in permafrost areas is more certain as climate models predict that high-latitude regions will be disproportionately affected by global warming with temperature increases of over 12°C predicted for much of North America and Northern Asia.
Journal ArticleDOI
Late Pleistocene submarine mass movements: occurrence and causes
TL;DR: An extensive study of Late Pleistocene continental slope submarine mass movements was performed in this paper, showing that mass movements are primarily controlled by cyrospheric-induced variations in sedimentation and local sea level.
Journal ArticleDOI
Growth and mass wasting of volcanic centers in the northern South Sandwich arc, South Atlantic, revealed by new multibeam mapping
TL;DR: New multibeam (swath) bathymetric sonar data acquired using an EM120 system on the RRS James Clark Ross, supplemented by sub-bottom profiling, reveals the underwater morphology of a not, vert, similar 12,000 km2 area in the northern part of the mainly submarine South Sandwich volcanic arc as discussed by the authors.
Journal ArticleDOI
Volcanic evolution of the South Sandwich volcanic arc, South Atlantic, from multibeam bathymetry
Philip T. Leat,Philip T. Leat,Simon Day,Alex J. Tate,Tara J. Martin,Tara J. Martin,Matthew Owen,David R. Tappin +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, multibeam bathymetry data are presented for the South Sandwich intra-oceanic arc which occupies the small Sandwich plate in the South Atlantic, and is widely considered to be a simple end-member in the range of intra oceanic arc types.
