In this paper, a compact electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structure for mitigating simultaneous switching noise (SSN) in high-speed mixed signal systems is proposed. Only one spiral slot is etched on the square patch, which constitutes the unit cell of the presented EBG pattern. The equivalent circuit model is developed to interpret the mechanism of the proposed power distribution network structure. By etching slot in the square patch of the EBG pattern, a high impedance is provided for prohibiting the SSN propagation. Furthermore, the capacitance is increased correspondingly, which can enlarge the bandwidth of the SSN suppression performance. An ultrawideband SSN suppression property is achieved from 0.35 to 20 GHz under the suppression level of −40 dB. In comparison with the traditional multiturns spiral EBG structure, not only the bandwidth but also the rejection level can be improved significantly with the presented design. Moreover, the SI performance is investigated, and the corresponding improvement measure is presented. Good agreements are observed between the simulation and measured results.

A Compact EBG Structure With Etching Spiral Slots for Ultrawideband Simultaneous Switching Noise Mitigation in Mixed Signal Systems

In this article, a novel double-square planar electromagnetic bandgap structure for suppressing wideband simultaneously switching noises is proposed. The equivalent circuit model for its periodic structure design is carefully developed and analyzed for the function as a band-stop filter. The performance of the circuit model is experimentally verified and lower cutoff frequency $(f_{L})$ can be effectively predicted, while keeping the compact size of the structure. Two test boards are fabricated and the measurement results show that the noise suppression performance can reach –30 dB between two adjacent ports from 3.2 to 21.2 GHz. To prove the solid signal transmission quality of the proposed structure in high-speed printed circuit board, feasibility studies on eye patterns are conducted at four different coded rates. All the performance results and the comparison with other works show its salient feature of solid signal integrity in both the frequency and time domains.

A Novel Double-Square Electromagnetic Bandgap Structure for Wideband SSN Suppression in High-Speed PCB

In this paper, a small electromagnetic bandgap structure that is suitable to be integrated into system-in-package is designed. The proposed structure, which is named as pinwheel perforated plane (PMPP), consists of meander line, mushroom-type patch, and the extended ground structure that is called a pinwheel. The proposed structure comprises three layers: top, middle, and ground. Moreover, the size of the proposed unit cell is 2.44 mm $\times \,\, 2.44$ mm. The 3-D electromagnetic simulation results reveal that the cascaded $1\times 2$ PMPP structure generates a stopband frequency of 3.35–28.17 GHz at a suppression depth of −40 dB. The power/ground noise suppression effect is confirmed by dispersion analysis from 3-D electromagnetic solver eigenmodes. Signal and power co-simulations are also performed to validate its integrity.

Pinwheel Meander-Perforated Plane Structure for Mitigating Power/Ground Noise in System-in-Package

A novel electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structure is proposed to suppress the simultaneous switching noise in high-speed circuits. The proposed EBG pattern is etched on the power plane while the ground plane remains intact. The unit is composed of an S-bridge EBG embedded with a coplanar EBG. The proposed EBG structure possesses an ultrawide bandgap extending from 0.28 to 25 GHz when the suppression depth is -45 dB. A prototype of the proposed EBG power plane is fabricated and tested, and good agreement is achieved between the simulation and the measurement.

Novel electromagnetic bandgap structure for wideband suppression of simultaneous switching noise

A novel tricyclic nested electromagnetic bandgap (TN-EBG) structure has been proposed to restrain the simultaneous switching noise (SSN) in high-speed digital systems. The presented TN-EBG structure was fabricated and measured based on the simulated performance of the configuration. It is found that the measured S-parameters are in good agreement with the simulated ones. Also, it is observed that an ultra-wide bandgap has been achieved, which almost ranges from 1 to 27 GHz with the noise suppression at −50 dB. Especially for the stopband width spanning from 1.1 to 21.6 GHz, the suppression depth level reaches up to−60 dB. The derived electric field distribution images have clearly exhibited the operation mechanism of the TN-EBG structure for SSN mitigation within the different frequency regions.

Tricyclic nested electromagnetic bandgap structure characterized with broad stopband bandwidth and deep noise suppression

A subregional embedded electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structure for suppressing simultaneous switching noise (SSN) is proposed by analyzing the SSN suppression mechanism. In this paper, a novel EBG structure is designed on the basis of periodic L-bridge, while, a small middle L-bridge (SML-bridge) cell with reverse meander line is embedded into each L-bridge unit. The L-bridge unit is divided into two regions. It is shown that the SML-bridge cell achieves an ultrawide bandgap extending from 380 MHz to 10 GHz at the suppression depth of −30 dB by both simulation and measurement. SML-bridge cell external is verified to meet signal integrity (SI) by the time-domain simulation. In addition, the conclusion for the noise suppression effect is estimated by equivalent circuit models and parallel-plate waveguide theory. Furthermore, the IR-drop and the dc resistance are accurately investigated by the simulation. Eye patterns are generated for analyzing the SI compared with the traditional L-EBG plane.
