A large and growing number of original papers on both the experimental and the theoretical aspects of stress wave propagation is appearing in the scientific literature, and two international conferences solely concerned with the subject have been held during the last five years. The purpose of this paper is to review recent experimental and theoretical advances in the propagation of deformation waves of arbitrary shape through elastic and anelastic solids, and also to attempt to outline the problems on which present efforts are being directed and to predict probable lines of future development.

Publisher Summary The fundamental assumption of all theories of plasticity—that of time independence of the equations of state—makes simultaneous description of the plastic and rheologic properties of a material impossible. I t is well-known that in many practical problems, the actual behaviour of a material is governed by plastic as well as by rheologic effects. It can even be said that for many important structural materials, rheologic effects are more pronounced after the plastic state has been reached. Every material shows more or less pronounced viscous properties. In some problems, the influence of viscous properties of the material may be negligible, while in others, it may be essential. Both sciences—plasticity and rheology—are concerned with the description of important mechanical properties of structural materials. Each of them has created its own methods of investigation and has developed within the framework of certain assumptions which, unfortunately, cannot always be satisfied in reality. The results of rheology are confined to cases where plastic strain is of no decisive importance.

Fundamental Problems in Viscoplasticity

After a brief historical introduction, recent achievements in the theory of plasticity are surveyed with emphasis on applications in mechanical engineering.Kinematic models are presented that indicate the complexities of mechanical behaviour in the plastic range. The fundamental theorems of limit analysis are discussed, and their application to two- and three-dimensional problems is illustrated by examples. Shakedown analysis and limit design are defined. Problems involving large plastic deformations are discussed with special reference to metal forming processes. Applications of the theory of plasticity to impact testing and blast damage are reviewed. Recent changes in the theory of structural stability in the plastic range are mentioned. Throughout the lecture, impending developments of the theory of plasticity are indicated.

Selection of earthquake ground motion records: A state-of-the-art review from a structural engineering perspective

This paper investigates the dynamic behavior and the seismic effectiveness of a non-conventional Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) with large mass ratio Compared with conventional TMD, the device mass is increased up to be comparable with the mass of the structure to be protected, aiming at a better control performance In order to avoid the introduction of an excessive additional weight, masses already present on the structure are converted into tuned masses, retaining structural or architectural functions beyond the mere control function A reduced order model is introduced for design purposes and the optimal design of a large mass ratio TMD for seismic applications is then formulated The design method is specifically developed to implement High-Damping Rubber Bearings (HDRB) to connect the device mass to the main structure, taking advantage of combining stiffness and noticeable damping characteristics Ground acceleration is modeled as a Gaussian random process with white noise power spectral density A numerical searching technique is used to obtain the optimal design parameter, the frequency ratio alpha, which minimizes the root-mean-square displacement response of the main structure The study finally comprises shaking table tests on a 1:5 scale model under a wide selection of accelerograms, both artificial and natural, to assess the seismic effectiveness of the proposed large mass ratio TMD Copyright (C) 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd
