Green remediation of As and Pb contaminated soil using cement-free clay-based stabilization/solidification

Geopolymer is a new environment-friendly cementitious material, and the development of geopolymer can reduce the carbon dioxide emission caused by the development of cement industry. Geopolymer materials not only have excellent mechanical properties, but also have a series of excellent properties such as fire resistance and corrosion resistance. Most industrial solid waste and waste incineration bottom ash are piled up at will, which not only occupies land resources, but also has a bad impact on the environment. Recycling them can be used as raw materials for preparing geopolymers. Geopolymer materials can effectively adsorb heavy metals, dyes, and other radioactive pollution, which is very beneficial to society's future development. However, due to the excellent properties of geopolymer materials, its application goes beyond that. Some useful information about geopolymer materials was introduced in this paper. The paper included the geopolymerization, the source of raw materials, the types of activators, the preparation methods, and the different application fields of geopolymer materials. The factors affecting the fresh properties and mechanical properties of geopolymer materials were discussed. In this paper, the shortcomings and application limitations of geopolymer materials were summarized, and their progress was summarized to lay a theoretical foundation for the long-term development of geopolymer materials.

Advances in geopolymer materials: A comprehensive review

Alkali-activated materials are a new class of compounds that have been studied by several authors worldwide. Alkali-activated binders can be competitive alternatives to traditional Portland cement, especially concerning CO2 emissions into the environment. However, in order to obtain this advantage, it is essential to use activators that were produced cleanly and sustainably, which is not the case of commercial products such as NaOH or sodium silicate. This paper provides a brief discussion about the activators traditionally used, and a review of existing literature about alternative activators, produced from agricultural or industrial wastes. Factors such as molar ratios and preparation of the solution were highlighted. The mechanical behavior of the pastes and mortars was also assessed, showing that the performance of alternative activators can be similar or even better than the conventional ones. Finally, some topics for future research on new activators were identified, aiming to stimulate more studies in this field.

Carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRPs) have been recently investigated as an alternative material for Geosynthetics to improve soil properties. One of the factors influencing the fiber orientation and mechanical properties of CFRP is the effect of soil overburden pressure. This study investigates the tensile behavior of cast-in-place CFRP. During the curing time of specimens, a wide range of normal stress is applied on specimens sandwiched between the soils. Two different soil types are used to determine the effect of soil grain size on the mechanical properties of CFRP. Specimens are also prepared with different specifications such as curing time and mixing soil in to the epoxy. In this study, tensile tests are conducted to investigate the effect of such parameters on tensile behavior of CFRP. The experimental results indicate that by increasing the normal stress and soil grain size, the ultimate tensile strength and the corresponding strain of CFRP decrease; however, reduction in elastic modulus is not noticeable. It should be noted that, increasing the curing period of epoxy resin and mixing soil in to the epoxy have no significant effect on the tensile properties of CFRP.
